My dog has a red splotch in his eye. Is it blood? What's the cause?

Without doing an exam and looking at the eye, it is hard to say what is going on with Spots' eye. If he starts squinting, that is a sign of pain. It's possible there is a wound near the eye that is causing blood to accumulate in the eye. He also could have an ulcer, foreign material in the eye, or even inflammation of the 3rd eyelid. I would recommend you take Spots in to see your vet to see if he needs medication for his eye.

The most common causes of hyphema are: * Injury or trauma to the eye or head * Retinal detachment or dysplasia * Hypertension - high blood pressure * Infection by certain parasites * Vasculitis - leaking blood vessels * Uveitis - inflammation of the front part of the eye * Cancer - uveal neoplasia and lymphoma (most common) * Glaucoma - increased eye pressure Some of these things may be life threatening. Therefore, its diagnosis and proper treatment is very important. I suggest you get Mara to your vet for an exam as soon as possible.

I'm working under the assumption that autocorrect changed hyphema (blood in the anterior chamber of the eye) to hyphens. If Penny does hyphema, this can be a result of a number serious underlying conditions, including severely elevated blood pressure, blood clotting disorders, trauma, among others. Judging by the picture it looks as if Pompeu has a burst blood vessel in his eye. This usually occurs from increased pressure in the eye or some type of injury or trauma. With time the blood will go away and there is nothing you need to do for the eye. If you notice any discharge, your dog is holding the eye closed, or if the eye seems swollen at all, then I would recommend you taking him into see the vet. There is a red spot in his eye, indicating blood, and you need to be sure there is no damage to the cornea itself. The vet can do this at an appointment. Please take him into one in the morning. I would highly recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible. Bleeding in the eye can be due to local trauma to the eye but also can be connected to underlying disease like toxin (rat poison), bleeding disorders, cancer, high blood pressure or infectious disease. I would be very concerned in an older dog with enlarged spleen that the blood in eye is related to this. I would recommend x-rays of the body and blood work to look at organ function and platelet count. Also, taking sassy to an ophthalmologist would be in her best interest

There are many types of bleeding disorders that could cause this with just mild trauma. Things like hemophilia, and von willebrands among others. Bleeding into the eye can also be caused by trauma, and infections.
