My dog has blood in her eye. Should I take her to the vet right away?

Hyphema (blood in the front chamber of the eye, in front of the iris and pupil) can be caused by a number of different things including trauma to the eye, an eye infection, retinal detachment, or a systemic problem such as a clotting disorder or even some types of cancer. The most common causes of hyphema are: * Injury or trauma to the eye or head * Retinal detachment or dysplasia * Hypertension - high blood pressure * Infection by certain parasites * Vasculitis - leaking blood vessels * Uveitis - inflammation of the front part of the eye * Cancer - uveal neoplasia and lymphoma (most common) * Glaucoma - increased eye pressure Some of these things may be life threatening. Therefore, its diagnosis and proper treatment is very important. I suggest you get Mara to your vet for an exam as soon as possible.

It could be that Sky has a subconjunctival hemorrhage. While those do heal on their own, the eye has to be examined by a vet right away to make sure there isn't any damage to the rest of the eye. Because subconjunctivial hemorrhages can be caused by trauma, which you think may have happened here with thorns or something similar, her eye needs to be checked for any other signs of trauma. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Sky into a vet now to have her eye examined and treated if necessary.

A bloodied eye is never ok. You should take Maxi to your vet right away to check the eye and make sure it wasn't completely punctured. He likely had some trauma to the eye and hopefully it isn't too serious (depending on a complete eye exam) and can be treated right away before the eye gets infected or any permanent vision problems develop. I would not recommend placing anything in the eye until further exam by your vet.

Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. I would highly recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible. Bleeding in the eye can be due to local trauma to the eye but also can be connected to underlying disease like toxin (rat poison), bleeding disorders, cancer, high blood pressure or infectious disease. I would be very concerned in an older dog with enlarged spleen that the blood in eye is related to this. I would recommend x-rays of the body and blood work to look at organ function and platelet count. Also, taking sassy to an ophthalmologist would be in her best interest
