My dog has a red spot in his eye. Is it serious? Should I see a vet?

My dog looks like he poked his eye. Will this heal on its own or should he get eye drops

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Bodie. Yes, I would have this checked out by a vet. There is a red spot in his eye, indicating blood, and you need to be sure there is no damage to the cornea itself. The vet can do this at an appointment. Please take him into one in the morning. It is very important that Coco be seen by a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment of her eye to determine if this is in fact a scratch to the eye/corneal ulcer, or another condition that may need to be treated in a completely different manner. If it is indeed an ulcer, it is likely painful, and if it is not properly managed, it can become a non-healing ulcer that becomes complicated to treat and could permanently injure the eye. Her vet will need to evaluate her eye, usually using a Fluorescein stain to see the extent of the damage, followed by treatment and re-examination/ staining of the eye at regular intervals to track healing until the condition resolves. Other testing (such as tonometry to test the eye pressures, or a Schirmer tear test to evaluate tear production) may be needed, based on the vet’s ophthalmic exam findings. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bruno. I do not see an obvious scratch to the surface of his eye (ie. corneal ulcer). However, many times a drop of dye is needed on the eye and a special light is used to detect an ulcer. He would need to see his veterinarian for this test. From there, proper eye drops can be prescribed. It is worrisome that the eye has been bothering him for so long. Keep the E-collar on him in the meantime to prevent any self trauma. This may be due to an infection, inflammation, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Why is my dog's eye red and has dried blood that won't wipe off?

Without doing an exam and looking at the eye, it is hard to say what is going on with Spots' eye. If he starts squinting, that is a sign of pain. It's possible there is a wound near the eye that is causing blood to accumulate in the eye. He also could have an ulcer, foreign material in the eye, or even inflammation of the 3rd eyelid. I would recommend you take Spots in to see your vet to see if he needs medication for his eye.

Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. My dog has red, bloodshot eyes and discharge. Should I see a vet?

Hello there! While probably not an emergency (unless Dodi appears to have discharge or discomfort), I do recommend that she is seen by a vet. Broken blood vessels in the sclera (white part) of the eye are not entirely uncommon in pop-eyed dogs like the Havanese (usually from stress or irritation), however it usually happens in one eye at a time. Dodi is a young dog, and I would not expect any serious conditions, however it is always best to contact a vet when it comes to strange eye issues as if there is a problem, they can get worse quickly. The vet will want to check for conjunctivitis and foreign objects, though I would expect that Dodi would be acting uncomfortable if either of these were the case. In the meantime, keep a close eye (no pun intended) on Dodi, and give your vet a call in the morning. I hope Dodi's eyes clear up soon! Best regards,
