What is the red membrane in my puppy's eye and why is he thin?

Please repost your question with a picture of your pets eyes so that we can give you an accurate assessment of Simba. Red eyes can be caused by just about anything including: allergic conjunctivitis, corneal hemorrhage, raised 3rd eyelid, etc. These are all treated differentyl and typically require a vet visit to treat. Weight loss in puppies is typically caused by intestinal parasites. I would suggest giving him a broad spectrum dewormer from your local pet store or feed store OR getting his stool tested by your vet is ideal to determine if he does have worms and what specific dewormer he needs. I am unsure what brand of food you are feeding now, but I would also recommend feeding him a high quality large breed puppy food such as Royal canin, Hill's Science Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. Simba is underweight for his age and breed. This puppy cereal and curd are not a balanced diet for a puppy, and it will not give him the nutrients he needs to grow properly. In addition, the lack of nutrients will lead him to be weak. He needs to be on a puppy formulated dry food only. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Please go out and buy him some puppy food now. I would also take him into a vet right away. I'm quite concerned about his weight, the fact that he won't eat food, and that he's sleeping all the time. Feed more food! Make sure Simba gets a good quality, commercially prepared puppy food (not food for active adults). Start by feeding the recommendation labeled on the bag, but if he wants more he can have more. Also, make sure that Simba doesn't have diarrhea and that he has been appropriately dewormed.

It's hard to tell if what you are seeing is normal or not. Some people mistake the appearance of the 3rd eyelid as a problem, when really it is normal. Suede also may have conjunctivitis, or inflammation/infection of the tissue surrounding his eyes. He could have allergies that cause the redness and prominence of his 3rd eyelid, the pink tissue present in the 2nd picture. Without doing an exam and looking at those tissues and in and around his eye, it is impossible to tell. If he starts squinting, that is a sign of pain, so I would definitely take him in asap. I would recommend you take him in to your vet for an exam to see if he needs any topical treatment for his eyes or if what you are seeing is his normal anatomy.

Hi there! I am so sorry Simba is not feeling well. From the picture, it looks like the white part of his eye (called the sclera) is very red. There are many reasons why his eye could be red. He could have a corneal ulcer (a scratch on his eye caused my trauma or dry eye), his could have conjunctivitis (inflammation of the tissue around the eye, caused by allergies or bacteria) or glaucoma (high pressure inside the eye) or something systemic causing these issues. I recommend going to the Emergency Clinic and seeing a veterinarian sooner rather than later if you are worried. Typically, a veterinarian will performed a full physical exam and ophthalmic (eye) exam. This includes a schirmer tear test (to determine if he has dry eye), a fluorescein stain test ( to determine if he has a corneal ulcer), sometimes the vet will check the pressure in the eye too. I also recommend seeing a vet ASAP if Simba has change in color or texture of the eye, any increase of green or yellow mucus discharge (may indicate infection), an increased pain, holding eye shut or a sudden squirt of clear liquid may indicate a ruptured ulcer. If so, this can be an emergency and should be evaluated at your earliest convenience. You can also start a consultation with, if you would like to talk more about this! It is difficult to say for sure but it looks like it could be a cholesterol deposit which is nothing to worry about. If he is squinting his eyes or having green or yellow discharge or any other abnormal behaviors then I would have your vet look at them to slensire he doesn’t have an ulcer or infection in his eyes. As far as his diet goes, if you can get him to eat some type of dog food (dry or canned), this would be better than just potatoes and cauliflower. If not, then I would consider adding some protein to his diet like boneless, skinless chicken breast and also some white rice. I would also add a dog multi-vitamin. Finally, you can look on www.Balanceit.com for recipes to help you make a balanced homemade diet for him. With him being a puppy, I worry about proper growth without the proper nutrients. Stay away from onions, grapes and raisins as these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

This white covering you are seeing is likely Tyson's third eyelid, which is a normal part of a dog's anatomy but should only come out when his eyes are closed such as when he is sleeping. When you see it out while his eye is open, that is a sign of illness such as an eye infection or foreign body in the eye. Clearly his eye is bothering him if he is rubbing at it, and you need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from doing that because he could make the problem worse. I will put a link below on how to make an Ecollar at home. Next step is get him into a vet asap. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss.
