My dog ran into a wall. Is he suddenly uncoordinated or losing sight?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 50 lbs

I let loki out today and just as usual he goes chasing after a bird in the backyard but he ran completely into a brick wall (that he usually easily jumps over to get into the grass) at full pelt! Knocked him off his feet, jumped back up, looked fine and ran back inside because I think he was a little bit embarrassed. I got really worried though because he's never this uncoordinated and the brick wall is only half a metre high. he seems to be fine now but what could that have been?

If it just happened once, then I'd assume he was just being a nutty dog chasing after a bird. These types of accidents do happen; especially to the more high-strung breeds.

However, there is always a chance that Loki's vision could be affected. It's worthwhile to have a look at the eyes and just make sure they look normal. If you see anything concerning, you can take him to a vet who can do a full eye exam. Also, if you notice him bumping into things again, then that would also warrant a visit to the vet.

For now, I wouldn't worry too much. It seems like he didn't hurt himself too bad when hit the wall, which is great, because that was what I was most concerned about when I read this.

These signs and the pics attached are already compatible with a trauma which would require immediate veterinary attention. A full assessment and anti-inflammatory/pain relief meds are likely to be needed in my opinion. Possible signs expected are many, from clear pain to hunched posture, ataxia (incoordination), to lameness, lethargy and mental depression (an many others depending on the type of injury).

Dogs have pretty hard heads, but keep an eye out for unconsciousness, disorientation, bleeding from the nose and eyes, pupils of unequal sizes, and seizures. If he's acting normally, it's unlikely you will see any of these signs, but if you do, have him seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

If your pet hit the wall hard enough with his head, yes it is possible that his brain could have been hurt. A sign of that is one pupil smaller than the other. This is known as anisocoria, and it is a sign of trauma to the brain. If you see this sign in your pet, it's quite serious, and he needs to see a vet immediately.

Poor Bruno! I am sure it hurt when he hit his head. Monitor him for any abnormal signs and have your vet take a look at him if you notice anything concerning, like disorientation, unsteadiness, unequal or dilated pupils, nausea, etc. If he just hit his head while turning around there probably wasn't enough force to cause any major damage.
