My dog leaks urine at night after surgery. Why isn't Propalin working?

There is a possibility that the nervousness is related to the Propalin. (Phenylpropanolamin). Side effects can be: Allergic reaction, including swelling of the lips, tongue and face, hives, fever and abnormal behavior. Seizure. Restlessness. Hyperactivity. Increased blood pressure. Increased heart rate. Irritability or aggressive behavior. Loss of appetite, lethargy. I suggest you consult with your veterinarian about either reducing the dosage, or changing to another medication.

Anything all natural doesn’t have any drug interactions, so yes they can be given together. Unfortunately there is nothing natural that is proven to help with urinary incontinence in dogs. I would stick with the Propalin if it is working for Cruz and continue the natural supplement if you wish, since it won’t do any harm. I hope that Cruz does well with his medication. I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. Hi there. Typically, with PPA we see results very quickly, within the first couple of days of starting the meds - so if your pup is still having urinary incontinence issues after 8 days, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about changing her dose or trying a different medication.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this condition with Gizmo. Phenylpropanolamine often works well for urinary incontinence, but I am worried that there might be something else going on if Gizmo is drinking a lot of water. If there is another medical condition going on, Phenylpropanolamine may not work. So, I would have you veterinarian perform a urinalysis on Gizmo to check for any underlying medication conditions that may be causing the urinary incontinence that are treatable with a different medication. He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs.
