Why is my dog incontinent after neutering? Vet says it's not linked.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. This sounds like urinary incontinence and that it is not secondary to a UTI. This could be caused by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI), but is less likely to occur in males and more in females. JD could have a back problem or other neurological condition leading to decreased urethral closure pressure. I would recommend a trial of a medication called PPA or DES and see if the trial helps reduce the urinary incontinence. If there is no improvement after the trial, I would recommend more diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasound, x-rays or CT scan with contrast. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. He could have some inflammation from the neuter or a brief lapse in house training from the stress of the surgery and anesthesia. He could also have a urinary tract infection. I recommend calling your Vet Monday and see if you can drop off a urine sample. They can test the urine for infection. If he has a urinary tract infection then they can prescribe antibiotics. If hes doesn't have an infection ask if they can prescribe and anti-inflammatory, if he isn't on one already from his neuter, in cause it's just some inflammation. Yes it can be. Sirius had anesthesia, a surgical procedure and medications for pain. His routine was changed and his eating and drinking also. Most likely they gave him fluids during the procedure that can cause increased urination. Please go back to his housebreaking training. I recommend keeping him in a crate when you’re not home, and taking him out frequently for potty breaks. Reward him and praise him when he goes outside. When you’re home keep Sirius on a leash with you so he’ll ask when he needs to go, and he can’t sneak off somewhere and mess in the house. Some females will develop incontinence after the spay. This does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and I do recommend to have Amber visit her veterinarian. The doctor will check her for a bladder infection and if that is clear they will discuss starting her on a medication to tighten the sphincter. This will likely stop the incontinence. Urinary incontinence is the main option, although not very common in male dogs. i would recommend asking your vet to send a fresh urine analysis to an external lab to make sure there is no infection before starting treating urine incontinence.

Poor Bob! This is likely benign prostatic hyperplasia. Unfortunately, the best treatment is to neuter him. You can ask your vet to prescribe him some anti-inflammatories to see if this helps but sometimes it doesn't work. For dogs used for breeding, there is also a product called finasteride to help treat this but I am not very familiar with this drug so I would talk to your vet in more detail about whether it would be safe for Bob. I will attach an article below. Also, sometimes drugs will work temporarily but eventually the problem comes back. I would also make sure the vet checked his urine to ensure he doesn't have an infection in his urine. Finally, if your vet thinks his prostate is painful, he may have a prostatitis which will require antibiotics. You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs.
