Can Phenylpropanolamine treat my senior dog's incontinence and thirst?

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Female | spayed | 14 years and 7 months old | 45 lbs

I have a 14 yr old Female Springer Spaniel (spayed) with urinary incontinence problems, and drinks a lot of water. Can Phenylpropanolamine be an effective treatment - and at what dosage for a medium build (45 #) dog?

I'm sorry you are dealing with this condition with Gizmo. Phenylpropanolamine often works well for urinary incontinence, but I am worried that there might be something else going on if Gizmo is drinking a lot of water. If there is another medical condition going on, Phenylpropanolamine may not work. So, I would have you veterinarian perform a urinalysis on Gizmo to check for any underlying medication conditions that may be causing the urinary incontinence that are treatable with a different medication. I have included a link to more information on Phenylpropanolamine as well below. The dosage can be variable for each dog, so I would ask your vet for a dosage recommendation if they think that is the right medication for Gizmo.

Hi there. PPA (phenylpropanolamine, or Proin) is a very common first-line choice for urinary incontinence in female dogs, and often works well in my experience. So it's likely that this could be a good option for Sofi, depending on whether she has any other underlying health issues to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription over the internet, as legally this has to be done by a veterinarian who has physically examined your pet. So I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian in your area to bring Sofi in for an exam. He/she can discuss medication options for urinary incontinence with you, and should be able to provide a prescription for whatever medication the two of you decide to try.

My senior dog has frequent urination & accidents. What meds help?

You are correct, Proin and DES are both medications that are commonly used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. However, its possible that urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder tumors could also cause these symptoms. Therefore, a visit to your vet for at least a urinalysis (urine test) is indicated. If no cause is found, then medication such as DES or Proin can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Antihistamines will have a significant effect on urination in dogs. My spayed dog leaks urine, Proin isn't working. What can I do?

I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. Natural non-prescription Proin alternatives for dog incontinence?

Is my dog's increased water intake on Proin a cause for concern?

That is not a common side effect of the medication. I do recommend a veterinary exam and lab tests to determine if she has a urinary infection, kidney problem or even diabetes or other metabolic problem that can change the amount of drinking and urination. Once they get a reason then they can start treatment that could consist of a diet change and/or other medications. There are drugs that can be given to Layla to help with her incontinence. Medications often effectively manage this condition, and helps prevent accidents. Phenylpropanolamine helps strengthen the urethral sphincter, or there hormone treatment is another drug option. If medications do not work, surgery may be considered. I would speak to your vet about seeing if medications would be a good option for Layla to help her with her incontinence.

Why is my older dog suddenly peeing inside, even after a negative urine test?

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in older spayed female dogs. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to control this. I’m glad you’ve checked her urine and since it was negative then starting her on medication for incontinence is the next step. I usually start with Proin, and they can add another medication if that isn’t effective. These are prescription medications so you’ll need to talk with your veterinarian about trying one.
