My dog's on PPA for 8 days, still leaking urine. Is it working?

Hi there. PPA (phenylpropanolamine, or Proin) is a very common first-line choice for urinary incontinence in female dogs, and often works well in my experience. So it's likely that this could be a good option for Sofi, depending on whether she has any other underlying health issues to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a prescription over the internet, as legally this has to be done by a veterinarian who has physically examined your pet. So I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinarian in your area to bring Sofi in for an exam. He/she can discuss medication options for urinary incontinence with you, and should be able to provide a prescription for whatever medication the two of you decide to try.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Gabapentin is a human medication but often prescribed to dogs. Urine incontinence is a reported side effect in people but not in dogs. However, as the mechanism of action in dogs and human is the same, I assume that the side effects are also the same. It takes at least a few days (if no longer) of administering gabapentin to achieve a good pain control. I would suggest to stop gabapentin as it most likely is causing urine incontinence. Clarabell can be prescribed a different pain relief, which hopefully will not produce any side effects.

I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. I'm sorry you are dealing with this condition with Gizmo. Phenylpropanolamine often works well for urinary incontinence, but I am worried that there might be something else going on if Gizmo is drinking a lot of water. If there is another medical condition going on, Phenylpropanolamine may not work. So, I would have you veterinarian perform a urinalysis on Gizmo to check for any underlying medication conditions that may be causing the urinary incontinence that are treatable with a different medication. I would continue with the prescribed dosing and contact your Vet at day 5 if there is no improvement. Maybe they can add additional pain relief. I wish Prince the best!

First of all i would recommend checking the dosage, it is written very clearly in the leaflet: 0.1 mL of Propalin Syrup per 5 kg of body weight, 3 times daily. this means he needs 0.16ml 3 times daily. unfortunately propalin doesn't always work, it does not surprise me because his case is not a classic case of urinary bladder atony which Propalin treats mainly.

Please provide some more information on the medications she is on. Incontinence is quite common in females and can be treated medically once complicating factors such as inflammation, infection and stones are ruled out
