My pug poops 8-10 times daily on new grain-free food. Is it normal?

Puppies do have more bowel movements than adult dogs. Most adult dogs typically have two to three movements a day but this is very much impacted by their food. The brand Royal Canin is low residue in all of their diets and typically has low stool production and maintains a very high-quality. Yes it is likely the extra fiber. No worries here whatsoever. Some puppies do poop quite a bit and 2-3 times a day is normal as long as the poop is solid. Lots of food means lots of poop. Since his feces appear to be normal the frequency likely is caused by the amount of food. Once you are at the point where you feed a normal amount of food to maintain his weight, the frequency should get less.

Some puppies poop more often than others, but I agree that 6-7 times a day seems a bit excessive. The most common cause of issues like this in a puppy this age would be intestinal parasites - so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet for analysis if this hasn't been done already. He/she can look at it under the microscope for evidence of worms like roundworms or hookworms, or other microscopic parasites like coccidia or giardia. If a problem is found, they can prescribe appropriate medication to treat it.

Sometimes puppies will defecate more frequently if they are excited. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buzoo's bowel movements - he should be seen by a vet if you notice that the stool is loose, has mucus or blood in it, or begins vomiting. It likely is his diet. A lot of the holistic or grain free diets can cause excessive stool production. It isn't something that is a medical concern however, especially i the stools are normal consistency. Perhaps you can let him stay outside for a longer period of time so that he is allowed to completely empty his colon before coming back in. Otherwise, just keep an eye on Asian and I hope that he continues to do well. If his stools do change in consistency or have visible worms, then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. Four to five times per day is likely abnormal meaning this particular diet is not agreeing with him. In addition, grain free diets are high in carbohydrates and can lead to weight gain. I would gradually transition him to a new formula over the course of seven days. Then keep track of his bowel movements to see if you are making progress. You can consider a large breed formula or one labeled for sensitive stomachs to start. If you are not making progress, then I would try a prescription low fat diet. I hope this information helps!
