Why is my 3-month-old pug puppy pooping so much? Is it normal?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Buzoo is adorable! Puppies do defecated a little more frequently than adult dogs, typically up to 4-5 times in a day. Sometimes puppies will defecate more frequently if they are excited. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buzoo's bowel movements - he should be seen by a vet if you notice that the stool is loose, has mucus or blood in it, or begins vomiting. Producing what seems like a lot of stool is not likely due to eating too much. A dogfood that is high in fiber or filler will generally cause more stool production. There is a brand called Royal Canin that is really high quality and low residue and most dogs will have a decrease in stool production. I recommend to try this diet. Do continue feeding twice a day as it’s better for the metabolism and decreased the potential for bloat. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If it's normal feces, I wouldn't be concerned, may just be the food change. If it is loose, or an odd color, shes lising weight, excessively hungry, etc, i would definitely get her checked. Good luck.

Some puppies poop more often than others, but I agree that 6-7 times a day seems a bit excessive. The most common cause of issues like this in a puppy this age would be intestinal parasites - so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet for analysis if this hasn't been done already. He/she can look at it under the microscope for evidence of worms like roundworms or hookworms, or other microscopic parasites like coccidia or giardia. If a problem is found, they can prescribe appropriate medication to treat it.

Yes it is likely the extra fiber. No worries here whatsoever. Some puppies do poop quite a bit and 2-3 times a day is normal as long as the poop is solid. While it is normal for a puppy to potty several times throughout the night until they gain control of their bladder muscles, it is unusual to be pooping 4 times a night. Lower quality kibbles have a lot of filler in them. This filler causes dogs to poop more. I don't know what brand you're feeding your pup, but there are so many brands out there to explore. It is important to remember to gradually transition from one food to another. The transition should take at least a week. Just add a little tiny bit of the new food to the old food, and take out just a tiny bit of the old food. Four to five times per day is likely abnormal meaning this particular diet is not agreeing with him. In addition, grain free diets are high in carbohydrates and can lead to weight gain. I would gradually transition him to a new formula over the course of seven days. Then keep track of his bowel movements to see if you are making progress.
