Why is my dog pooping so often? What food can reduce his bowel movements?

Frequent bowel movements are not necessarily abnormal. They should have a firm consistency, and not be like diarrhea. I would recommend that you have him on a large breed puppy food to help support his rapidly growing bones. You can try a different brand of food and see if that helps decrease the stool frequency.

If the stool isn't diarrhea and is formed then I would blame the digestibility of the food you are feeding and would change brands of food. Individual dogs can digest the same food differently. Producing what seems like a lot of stool is not likely due to eating too much. A dogfood that is high in fiber or filler will generally cause more stool production. There is a brand called Royal Canin that is really high quality and low residue and most dogs will have a decrease in stool production. I recommend to try this diet. Yes it is likely the extra fiber. No worries here whatsoever. Some puppies do poop quite a bit and 2-3 times a day is normal as long as the poop is solid. I would however, but back on the daily egg, since this is mostly just added carbs for pets and can lead to her getting overweight. Best wishes with your puppy Tasha. Take care.

As long as Gary isn't straining to defecate or having other problems I wouldn't worry about his stool seeming to be small or firm. The typical frequency for defecation is once a day to several times a day, and some dogs may not even go once a day. If Gary is straining to defecate or has a history of anal gland problems or constipation this may not be ideal, but otherwise you probably don't need to make any changes to his diet.

Puppies do have more bowel movements than adult dogs. Most adult dogs typically have two to three movements a day but this is very much impacted by their food. The brand Royal Canin is low residue in all of their diets and typically has low stool production and maintains a very high-quality.
