My dog has a pink nostril. Is it sinusitis or aspergillosis?

Poor Mazie! A fungal infection like aspergillosis is certainly one possible cause of persistent sneezing and nosebleeds that are not resolved with antibiotics. Other possibilities would include a nasal foreign body, or a nasal tumor. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about the next steps from here to try and get a diagnosis. In many cases, referral to a specialist for rhinoscopy and a CT scan is needed to determine the problem.

It sounds like your veterinarian is doing a great job with a difficult disease. I'm glad to hear that Wiley seems to be a little better after his last procedure. I think adding oral anti-fungal medication sounds like a great idea, so I think we will just need to wait to see adding the Fluconazole is sufficient. Sometimes we need to combine oral anti-fungal medications. My latest case of aspergillus is being treated with Terbinafine and Voriconazole which are expensive, but seem to be working well. Not really, aspergillus stays contained in the sinuses of your dog and it also needs certain conditions to thrive in those sinuses, as well as a compromised immune system of the dog. Aspergillosis can be treated with flushing the sinuses with a fungicidal wash. In order to do so, your dog will need to be sedated and in most cases the vet will have to make an access ( trepanize a hole) through the bone above the sinus. This is a bit complicated but doable and the fungus can be killed off that way. So again, no, it is not possible to directly transfer aspergillosis from one dog to another.

The big question is the nasal discharge, especially the bloody one is it from one nostril or is it from both? If it is from one then I highly recommend going for advanced imaging of Max's nose. If it is both and the antibiotics and prednisone don't help then I would recommend further imaging. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thanks for reaching out about Bella. Nasal aspergillosis would be a concern. A deep nasal fungal culture should be submitted, and tested for sensitivity to anti-fungals. Nasal flushes could help dislodge the rhinoliths (nasal plugs). Steam treatments might also help keep nasal passages open. Still, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

When dogs have nasal discharge on one side only it indicates a problem in that nostril or sinus. They can get pieces of grass or seeds in their nose that can cause this in addition to a nasal polyp or tumor. This looks infected so I recommend a veterinary exam. They may need to sedate Bowser to flush out and examine in the nostril, the throat and may need an X-ray of his sinus. Often flushing out or removing an object will cure this. If it’s a polyp or mass removing some of it to get a biopsy and diagnosis may be needed. Antibiotics may be prescribed as well for the infection.
