This is more of a cosmetic probelm and may be what his veterinarian was referring to at your last appointment. If the nose cracks, bleeds or the pigment changes to white or pink though, this is concerning. It can indicate an autoimmune disease. This would need to be diagnosed with a biopsy. In the first scenario, I usually will treat with a topical ointment to dissolve the extra skin or keratin. I would take Kodiak into the vet to have this examined, as it's not normal for the inside of the nostril to be bright red and raw looking. If he's resistant to you looking at it, I would imagine that it is bothering him a bit. You are correct that it could be due to a respiratory infection (sinusitis), but it could also be due to injury, a foreign body, fungal infection, or a nasal tumor. Kodiak should see a vet today during normal business hours, or tomorrow morning for an exam.
