My Yorkie has a pink nose. Is it prone to sunburn in sunny places?

If it is a light colored like white or tan and has a pink pigment on the nose and the hair is thinner this is a good idea. Watch the ears also as they can be a problem if white haired also. Just be careful to get a safe dog version or a human one that does NOt contain zinc oxide as this can be hazardous if large amounts are swallowed

Hello, Lioh's may be undergoing de-pigmentation changes in his nose either due to sun allergy if he is outdoors a lot or a form of vitiligo. If sun allergy, this can be very itchy and may spread to other parts of the body. Vitiligo is mainly a cosmetic change that doesn't require medical management. You may monitor for sneezing, bleeding, or rubbing at his nose and consider taking him to your veterinarian if he is showing any of these. Otherwise, he looks like a very cute guy. Hope this helps

Hi, the areas that need to be protected are those uncovered or just partially covered by fur and routinely exposed to the sun, so I would include the tip of the ears and areas above the eyes in certain breeds, as well as nose and paws.

There are a number of reasons for loss of pigmentation on a dog's nose, most of them just cosmetic, which is what yours appears to be. As long as the skin remains healthy and normally textured, I would just to bring it up to your vet the next time your dog is in for his annual visit or take a picture and send it to them now to see what they have to say about it. This is where the dog's body attacks its own skin cells resulting in an ulcerated and cracked nose. A common type of this disease is known as discoid lupus. There are other types as well though. It is typically diagnosed by a skin biopsy. I would ask her veterinarian if this is a possibility. I hope this information helps!

Hi, Yorkies can tend to have pigmented areas of skin. As long as the gums and mucous membranes are pink, moist, and if you press on the gum and it goes from white back to pink within 2 seconds (Capillary Refill Time), all of those are normal indicators of proper oxygenation. It is good you noted this because it is true, that when areas of the body do not get properly oxygenated, they turn blue. Although if the gums are pink, skin seems normal beside the pigment and Hugo is acting like a normal, healthy Yorkie, the skin color should not be of concern. Hope this was helpful! -Dr. Gordon

Issues such as allergies to something in the environment such as pollen, upper respiratory infections, issues with the nose, throat, or lungs, and other underlying health issues can all be possible causes. If this has happened more than once, is ongoing, or Yusi seems very ill or in distress, it is a good idea to schedule a veterinary checkup to rule out any health issues and get any symptoms treated.
