Should my dog wear nose sunscreen when playing outside in summer?

Excessive sun exposure can certainly be damaging to the cells in the skin in both humans and animals. Dogs can be predisposed to melanoma, hemangiomas and certain auto-immune disorders of the skin. It is recommended to use sunscreen lotion / spray that is intended for use in animals that will be in excessive amounts of sun. Epi Pet has a product for sun protection that is a lotion which can be applied to the areas of the animal where there is less hair (nose, abdomen, etc.). I hope this helps! Hi, the areas that need to be protected are those uncovered or just partially covered by fur and routinely exposed to the sun, so I would include the tip of the ears and areas above the eyes in certain breeds, as well as nose and paws.

Great question! It's is a very good idea to use sunscreen on Pablo this summer. I would recommend using Vetbasix, which is specially formulated for cats and dogs. You can get it in Australia online or in a pet store.

Most dogs don't need sunscreen. Some dogs with sensitivities to sunlight or thin, fine, white hair may need sun protection - usually in the form of sun avoidance or clothing. If sunburn is an issue for Noble, I would recommend having him examined by the vet to see if there is a sun sensitivity or disease process allowing this to happen. The issue with most sunscreens is that the dogs are prone to licking it off. If you want to try a human product, make sure that there is no zinc in the sunscreen.

Poor pup! The snow, ice, and salt on the ground to melt the ice can be very hard on a dog's paws. While he is at home, you can put a little vaseline on his paws to help the chapping. Put a sock over his paws to keep him for licking at the vaseline, and put some tape very loosely on the top of the sock to keep it on. You may have to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at the socks, and you can get one from your vet's clinic or a pet store. When you are walking him outside, I recommend getting Musher's Secret. That will help protect his paws from the snow, ice, and salt. You can get it online or in a pet store. As for his nose, he may have snow nose, which is when a dog's nose turns lighter in color in months when there isn't much sunlight. It should become darker again when spring and summer returns.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The little area of discoloration is not necessarily anything to worry about. I see this commonly with time with dark skinned animals. As long as the skin does not seem irritated and the discoloration does not happen on the nose itself, I am inclined to just continue to watch it.
