My dog has orange poop but is acting normal. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Jindo | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 25 lbs

Hi. My dog, Mugi, has just had an orange poop. Her appetite is fine, she's eating, playing and going on walks. I'm not sure if I should be concerned and bring her to the vet. It doesn't look like there were any red strikes. I'm not feeding her pumpkin or orange foods that it would turn out this bright. Any feed back would be appreciated. Thank you

I'm really glad to hear that Mugi is still eating and acting normally! Stool color can change with any different food (not even just orange foods) as a result of how the bile and gut bacteria shift in response. I definitely understand your concern because finding stool with orange and greenish coloration can seem a bit disconcerting. The good news is that there really isn't anything you need to worry about since Mugi otherwise seems so normal. Just continue to keep an eye on her and any other changes to her stool color. However, if she becomes lethargic, experiences a loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in her water consumption/urine volume, then it's worth taking a trip to the vet for evaluation to rule out other medical issues. I hope that everything continues to go well!

Shades of stool color can vary widely from day to day, hour to hour, or (as you experienced) within the same bowel movement. Typically, diet and supplements are the main sources of changes in stool color, so the supplement that you're using may be to blame. The color of the supplement or food are less to blame for the color change than the way some of the vitamins and minerals digest. Regardless, since Chispas is still eating and acting normally, there's no cause for concern. Shades of brown in stool are all normal. However, colors like black, red, or white stool are all signs that something is amiss. Based on what you've described, I don't think you need to be concerned in the slightest!

Changes in stool color can happen, especially if there was a change in the diet. I would not be concerned about a one-time color change if Peggy Sue is otherwise normal. If she has a poor appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea, then she should get checked out by a vet.

Why is my active dog having orange loose, fatty stools with mucus?

Hello. An orange stool could be an indication of hemolysis ( destruction of RBCs ) or a possible gallbladder problem, or just the dye from something ingested. The mucous is usually a reaction to some irritation in the colon. If everything seems perfectly normal in how Mille acts & eats, you might just feed her a very bland diet ( 25% boiled chicken & 75% plain white rice ) for a couple of meals. If her stool self-corrects, then it was just something she got into. If it persists, you will need to have your veterinarian examine her to make sure all is OK. Sometimes a change in diet will cause the stool to change color. Sometimes a mild viral infection can also cause this but again, I would not worry unless she loses her appetite or becomes lethargic. My dog swallowed an orange piece. Is loose stool a sign of trouble?

I am not sure if by "orange piece" you mean a piece of the fruit orange or something else. If it was a piece of orange, then I would not worry. However if it was something solid and orange colored, it should come out with the stool within two days. If not, and if your dog gets diarrhea and starts to vomit, you need to take Coco to a vet for an exam as it could have caused an intestinal blockage.

Fresh fruits and veggies can sometimes change stool color, however other issues such as underlying illness or even organ dysfunction can also change the color. I would remove any extras for a few days to see if Minnie's stool returns to normal. If it doesn't, or you see signs of illness, a vet visit to rule out any issues is best.
