My 100 lb dog has an upset stomach. Can I safely give him Mylanta?

Fat, skin and seasonings can cause GI upset and even pancreatitis in some dogs. Peace Lily can also be toxic to animals, so I would remove this plant to where she doesn't have access. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/mauna-loa-peace-lily/ I do no recommend mylanta. Allow her to have water but no food for ~12 hours, then offer her half of her normal dog food. If she tolerates that well, then she can have the rest of her food a couple hours later. If she has vomitting, excessive diarrhea or acts lethargic then she should be seen by a veterinarian for treatment. I hope she's back to normal quickly.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We do use Tum for certain conditions in dogs. Rarely for tummy upset, usually for low calcium. The most common antacid used in animals is pepcid (famotidine). The medication and dosing has to be prescribed by a Vet that has examined your dog. I hope this helps1

While we do not typically recommend Tums for dogs, you can safely give him some Prilosec (omeprazole), to help reduce acid secretion in the stomach and help him feel better. Prilosec generally comes in 20 mg tablets, so he could receive 40 mg orally twice daily. If the clinical signs persist beyond a day or so after trying the Prilosec, I recommend that he be seen by your veterinarian again, as a more serious problem could be present. Tums is not likely to help with the diarrhea. His problem is not the stomach, it is the colon (large intestines). I suggest you use Pepto Bismol instead but please refer to these guidelines: ( https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/pepto-bismol/ )\ A 70 pound dog would need 7ml - a teaspoon is 5ml - so I would give 1.5 teaspoons. If the diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours (despite the Pepto) then you need to get him to a vet for an exam. Also, if is not eating or feeling otherwise unwell he should see a vet.

I do not recommend giving over the counter medication such as Tums to Lyle. If you think he is in pain you are likely correct, and that warrants a trip to your veterinarian to see why Lyle is uncomfortable. What looks like stomach pain can be due to pancreatitis/ inflammation of the pancreas, back pain, infection, a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract due to a mass or ingestion or a foreign object. Your vet should be able to help figure out what is going on and formulate an appropriate treatment plan for Lyle. I hope he feels better soon!

A better choice for an antacid would be Pepcid. You can discuss it and get a dose based on Bella's weight from your veterinarian. Legally, we are prohibited from telling you to give it and providing a dose without a physical exam and a VPCR (Veterinarian-Patient-Client Relationship). The bland diet is definitely a good idea. Consider a short fast, 12-24 hours, to give her tummy a rest. Offer the bland diet in small, frequent amounts

Stomach upset could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet, infectious diseases, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have Fuzz seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of her symptoms. In the mean time, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding Fuzz small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken with some boiled white rice once it has cooled. You can also try offering her cooked extra lean ground beef and boiled potatoes. These bland foods can help settle Fuzz's stomach. I don't recommend giving any over the counter medication to Fuzz, as some human medications can be harmful for pets.
