My dog has watery diarrhea. Can I give him TUMS for his upset stomach?

While we do not typically recommend Tums for dogs, you can safely give him some Prilosec (omeprazole), to help reduce acid secretion in the stomach and help him feel better. Prilosec generally comes in 20 mg tablets, so he could receive 40 mg orally twice daily. If the clinical signs persist beyond a day or so after trying the Prilosec, I recommend that he be seen by your veterinarian again, as a more serious problem could be present. I do not recommend giving over the counter medication such as Tums to Lyle. If you think he is in pain you are likely correct, and that warrants a trip to your veterinarian to see why Lyle is uncomfortable. What looks like stomach pain can be due to pancreatitis/ inflammation of the pancreas, back pain, infection, a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract due to a mass or ingestion or a foreign object. Your vet should be able to help figure out what is going on and formulate an appropriate treatment plan for Lyle. I hope he feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We do use Tum for certain conditions in dogs. Rarely for tummy upset, usually for low calcium. The most common antacid used in animals is pepcid (famotidine). The medication and dosing has to be prescribed by a Vet that has examined your dog. I hope this helps1

If the diarrhea doesn’t improve within a few days or if any other symptoms emerge then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Having water available is fine. He is really adorable and I can tell you love him so if he doesn't seem better by tomorrow morning then you should get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Yes, dogs can have it. To treat acute diarrhea, 0.5 mL/lb (1 US teaspoon for every 10 pounds your dog weighs) can be given every 4 to 6 hours for 5 days. The dosage can be higher depending on how severe the symptoms are and other contributing factors, with a maximum recommended dose of 0.9 mL/lb to be given every 6 to 8 hours. Shake the bottle well before use.

I don’t recommend pepto in dogs. It doesn’t seem to do much and some dogs are sensitive to the aspirin component. You can do boiled chicken and cooked white rice, toast without butter, apple sauce, and other bland white human foods. If he isn’t back to normal in a day or two, it would be best to have him checked out by a vet.
