What can I safely give my small dog for an upset stomach at home?

Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in Luna's normal diet. If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.

Thats hard to say. Pets can have upset stomachs for many reasons. This can range from bacterial over growth, to parasites, to inflammatory bowel disease to kidney disease to even cancer. Without a physical exam and likely some basic diagnostics, its impossible to know the cause. Home made diets are not good long term unless they are formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. Otherwise the diets are often unbalanced which can result in problems if they are fed long term. At home you can try feeding her a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled what rice. Feed this for 1 week. Giving her probiotics during this time may also help. If she is not back to normal after 1 week, if she gets worse or if it returns, she needs to see her veterinarian. This diet is not balanced but it is fine to feed for this length of time. You can do boiled chicken and cooked white rice, toast without butter, apple sauce, and other bland white human foods. You can try a few things today to see if she improves. 1) Bland diet- boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice 2) Probiotic- over the counter Culturelle from your local pharmacy can help restore the normal GI flora 3) Fiber- add 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily As long as she remains active, does not start excessively vomiting and still has a good appetite, you can try these things for the next 24 hrs or so and see if she gradually improves her condition. You could feed boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice and see if she feels better within 24 hours. If she doesn't want to eat that or she continues vomiting she should probably get checked out by a vet since she is an older girl. If she isn't normally bothered by thunderstorms, then it is unlikely that they would cause her to lose her appetite this morning.
