My dog ate chicken skin & peace lily. Can I give her Mylanta for upset stomach?

Oh no, that's not good that Layla ate a petal from a lily! As I'm sure you know, the lily is toxic to dogs and causes GI upset, anorexia, and tremors. Typically a dog has to eat large amounts of it to cause these symptoms, so one petal may not be enough to cause any problems. I would watch Layla for now, and if you do see any GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Magnesium hydroxide (the active ingredient in Mylanta) is contra-indicated in patients with certain diseases. It also interacts with a wide variety of prescriptions drugs, Accordingly, it should not be given unless recommended by a veterinarian who has full knowledge of the pet's complete medical history. Also, because Mylanta is a human medication, any use of it in animals if off-label and we are therefore legally unable to provide doses for such drugs without first examining the patient. I suggest you speak with your veterinarian regarding giving this drug to your pet and to obtain an appropriate dose.

Hello. It was good that you put Lily's food up. A small fast of 8-12 hours will not hurt, then tomorrow feed her very small amounts of plain cooked chicken breast, plain cooked white rice (preferably not minute rice) , & small amounts of lo-fat cottage cheese. Try this for about 24 hours & if she seems to be perking up, start to add back her regular diet. If she still seems to be having issues, please see your veterinarian to have her evaluated. I really don't know what medications you have available in Australia to give so I am not sure what to tell you to do. Usually symptoms from eating something like this are self-limiting, meaning after 24-48 hours they will resolve on their own. I just suggest you feed some plain white bread now if she will eat it - one or two slices. This may help prevent diarrhea and further GI upset. Then feed nothing else for 8-12 hours. Water is fine for her to have.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Sissy's little dietary indiscretion. Luckily, rolaids are not dangerous to dogs, though they have been known to cause GI upset if more than a couple are eaten. I'm glad to hear that she is drinking water, as my main concern with continued diarrhea is dehydration. If Sissy is lethargic or vomits any more, she should see a vet. If she's acting normal other than seeming like she has an upset stomach, I suggest withholding food for a while (4-6 hours), then try feeding her small meals of boiled chicken and rice. This will help dry up any remaining loose stool, which sounds like it's on the way out, anyway. There isn't much else that you can safely give her at home other than bland food. You might try giving her a piece of bread or a few unsalted crackers, as that yellow liquid you mentioned sounds like bile (usually comes up when the stomach is empty). If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.

In looking up this plant, I can't find any information that they are toxic to dogs, but it is possible that eating it upset her stomach. Given that Roxy isn't acting any differently and is eating, I wouldn't be too worried about her just yet. I would be more worried if she having persistent diarrhea, is vomiting frequently, and isn't eating or drinking. You can try offering her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Should she return to normal (i.e. no vomiting or diarrhea), then she will be just fine.
