Does my dog remember me long-term? How good is a dog's memory?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know exactly how long a dog truly remembers but I believe that some dogs will always recognize their previous owners. I don't think changing foster homes will affect their memory but it could increase his stress. Some dogs tolerate stress better than others but keeping him with his pals will certainly help. That sounds like an awfully big change for Spring, so he may experience some anxiety and stress about being chained up, especially if he hasn't before. Spring likely won't forget you if you return to him, as dogs have gone years before seeing their owners again and are usually happy at their return. Looking into seeing if someone else can watch him that can give him more time, or seeing if a rescue can take him temporarily into foster care may be better off for his mental and physical well-being. Being chained all day long with little exercise or care likely isn't the best for him. You may try contacting a local shelter in your area to see if they have any programs such as temporary fostering that may be a better option.

Dogs understand more than we think and I am sure she knows you are leaving because you have to and you are coming back. What I recommend in these cases is to leave something with your scent like perhaps a t-shirt or something like that so that she can smell you when you are gone. This will help bring her comfort. Hi there. Dogs are generally very good at forming new bonds when they change homes, so I doubt that this will be a problem at all :) You will need to keep up with his training and follow the directions you are given in order for his skills to stay sharp - but as long as you do this, he should adapt and remember his training just fine.
