Do dogs remember past owners? How do foster homes impact their memory?

Hello. Dogs have excellent memories, for the good & the bad, but they also have a tremendous ability to forgive & move on. But their memories do work differently than ours for some things. That is why dogs are just as happy to see us after 5 minutes as after we have been gone 5 days. It is remarkable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That sounds like an awfully big change for Spring, so he may experience some anxiety and stress about being chained up, especially if he hasn't before. Spring likely won't forget you if you return to him, as dogs have gone years before seeing their owners again and are usually happy at their return. Looking into seeing if someone else can watch him that can give him more time, or seeing if a rescue can take him temporarily into foster care may be better off for his mental and physical well-being. Being chained all day long with little exercise or care likely isn't the best for him. You may try contacting a local shelter in your area to see if they have any programs such as temporary fostering that may be a better option.

Hi there. Dogs are generally very good at forming new bonds when they change homes, so I doubt that this will be a problem at all :) You will need to keep up with his training and follow the directions you are given in order for his skills to stay sharp - but as long as you do this, he should adapt and remember his training just fine.

Dogs are very adaptable but it’s hard to keep adjusting to a new person and a new house. Dogs like stability. They want to bond with their human. They like a routine and changing households will disrupt all of that and begin the process over again. It is best to place the puppy in a forever home where he will stay but a few changes and bumps along the way are generally OK. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Yes she will remember you but she will likely miss then when your return as she will have a new routine by then. She likely won't be more attached to your parents in that short time frame of care. But it is good she will get used to them and that environment for the future. It will make it less stressful down the road if she needs to watched again

This can certainly be a confusing situation for Pepper, which may explain why he was confused when he returned the last time. If Pepper is going to a bad environment, I would try and talk this over with his previous owner and ensure him that Pepper is much better off in the environment he has been in the longest. Unfortunately, if he gave you temporary care of his dog, technically Pepper still is his dog. You could also ask the man if you could adopt Pepper from him and pay him an "adoption fee" and make it so that if you adopt Pepper, he no longer has ownership and is no longer allowed to take Pepper for visitation. Not necessarily. Your dog is likely going to stay loyal to you because you are his owner and have been with him the longest. They don't call them man's best friend for nothing! : ) Also dogs don't easily forget. No worries. Enjoy your trip! Take care.
