Will my dog be upset if I leave her for 5 days while traveling?

It sounds as though you are quite worried about leaving Precious. Fortunately, dogs do not have the same sense of time that we do, nor the ability to anticipate scary occurrences. She may have some degree of anxiety, but many dogs enjoy their boarding experience and exposure to other people and change of scenery. I'm sure your vet will call if they have any concerns about Precious. Try to relax and enjoy your vacation! :-)

Nuba will remember you! Dogs have a very strong sense of smell, and your scent will be familiar to her when you come home. I'm sure she will be very happy to see you when you come home, have a safe trip :-)

Not necessarily. Your dog is likely going to stay loyal to you because you are his owner and have been with him the longest. They don't call them man's best friend for nothing! : ) Also dogs don't easily forget. No worries. Enjoy your trip! Take care.

My suggestion is to have a friend or neighbor stop by a at least a couple times during the day while you are gone just to make sure Soska is doing okay and has enough food and water, is let outside to potty, and to watch Soska in case she goes into labor a few days early and should any problems arise. If a friend, family member, or neighbor can't be available, I would hire a sitter to stop by 2-3 times during the day while you are traveling. I hope this helps and thanks again for your post!

It is unlikely that she would die. However, she would be extremely stressed. Dogs are so bonded to their people, and it is very upsetting to them when they are used to human interaction and then left alone for days on end; Chihuahuas certainly tend to be a breed that is usually VERY bonded to “their people.” The stress may lead to vomiting and diarrhea, lack of appetite, which could potentially lead to life threatening dehydration (though water may be available she may be unable to keep it down, and massive fluid losses through diarrhea often require IV fluids). A highly stressful, unsupervised event may also result in risky behavior such as: *jumping excessively at windows and doors, which could be a strangulation hazard if there are curtain or blind cords around *chewing on electric cords * jumping off of high furniture which could result in a fracture or other injury in a small breed dog. If you can have a friend or family member come in and check on Taco even just once a day, that would be highly preferable. Twice a day visits would better, and a boarding kennel or pet sitter would be the best options. Thank you for using PerCoach, I hope that information is helpful for you!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Having someone come to the house is a great idea, it will keep Canela happy in her own environment. Consider having the friend bring Canela for walks if they can. Also, consider calling and 'skyping' Canela while you are gone. Another thing to prepare for your vacation is to discuss with your vet and your emergency clinic that you are going away, and what you wish to happen with Canela in the event of an emergency. Stress can bring on some conditions (but you are doing everything to minimize this already which is great!), so giving your vet/the emergency vet your contact information, and some people will leave their credit card information with financial limits and wishes, so that if something happens in the middle of the night and you cannot be contacted Canela is given the care you desire. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Most of the people work all day and have animals. I know we all feel guilty about leaving our pets but that is the way life goes. As long as when you are home you are walking her, interacting and playing with her you are doing a good job. You can consider sending her to doggie day care 2-3 times per week for interaction, have a neighbor kid pop in to walk her or send her to a friend or relatives house who may not work as other options. The cage is a safe place for her and your personal belongings. I wish you the best!
