My dog inhaled water during bath. Could he get secondary drowning?

I'm sorry that Tuck inhaled some water! Given that he is acting totally normal, running around and playing, I would suspect he will be fine. If he was having difficulty with this, he would not be running around or playing and he likely did not ingest enough of the bath water to cause a significant problem. I would be more concerned if he was acting like this after being in a swimming pool or a large body of water. Keep an eye on the hacking, and if it's continues or gets worse over the next 24 hours, then I would be worried and have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps :-)

He should be fine - if he had aspirated the water or if it was bothering his nose I would expect to see sneezing or coughing. It's possible that the water ran down to the back of his throat and he swallowed it.

I'm so sorry to hear Bentley had such a scare! Ingestion of water can lead to fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and a secondary infection (such as pneumonia). As you found him right away and he was treated quickly, typically these dogs do recover fully. He may be sent home with a medication to help decrease any remaining fluid in his lungs (such as Lasix) and a prophylactic antibiotic to prevent infection. When he is home, continue to monitor him closely over the following days for any lethargy, inappetence, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. If these are seen, I would have him rechecked immediately. If he is otherwise acting normally, I would have him rechecked after he finishes his medications and then I would expect him to be fine. Good luck!

Hello. It does not sound like anything is too serious with Frankie. If there was any aspiration pneumonia from the water, his symptoms would be worsening, not be intermittent. He may have swallowed a bit more pool water than normal that irritated his stomach or esophagus. He may be regurgitating a bit just from this alone. As long as he seems pretty normal, his resting respiratory rate is between 30 - 40 breaths per minute, then he may just have irritated things & should do fine in a few days. But if the coughing worsens, then this may be a case of tracheobronchitis that might respond very nicely to anti-inflammatory medication & an antibiotic. I'd worry that Hugo may have aspirated water during the bath. It's also possible that the bath was unrelated and that he ingested something, or that he has a neurologic problem. I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and blood work, and potentially x-rays as well.

It's really impossible to know what the noise was that Teddy made without seeing him. I would watch for any signs of upper respiratory disease like Bordetella ("kennel cough") that is a mild infectious disease dogs can acquire in any social situation where other dogs are present, like a vet clinic or boarding facility. If he starts coughing in the next few days this may be what is going on and I'd recommend a vet recheck as he may need antibiotics and cough suppressants. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry unless it continues.

You are welcome! I'm so glad that we are able to help you :-) Poor Teddy falling in the pool! If he got caught in the pool and was unable to get out, he could drown, so that would not be good at all. In addition, the pool water likely has chlorine in it, and while it won't be high levels, it's not the best for him to drink. The chlorine in the pool could dry out his skin as well if he went in again. I would try to keep him away from the pool if possible.
