My dog inhaled water during bath, now hacking/snorting. Is he okay?

He should be fine - if he had aspirated the water or if it was bothering his nose I would expect to see sneezing or coughing. It's possible that the water ran down to the back of his throat and he swallowed it.

It could be possible but not likely. Teddy would need a fair amount of water in his lungs to cause a problem, which shouldn't happen during a bath. He should be ok, but you can monitor him to be safe.

I'm so sorry to hear Bentley had such a scare! Ingestion of water can lead to fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and a secondary infection (such as pneumonia). As you found him right away and he was treated quickly, typically these dogs do recover fully. He may be sent home with a medication to help decrease any remaining fluid in his lungs (such as Lasix) and a prophylactic antibiotic to prevent infection. When he is home, continue to monitor him closely over the following days for any lethargy, inappetence, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. If these are seen, I would have him rechecked immediately. If he is otherwise acting normally, I would have him rechecked after he finishes his medications and then I would expect him to be fine. Good luck!

That is actually a normal number of breaths for a dog who is deeply sleeping. As long as he's not on death's door, respiratory disease (including fluid in the lungs) would increase his respiratory rate. Over 30 breaths per minute is the cut off. If he keeps coughing, I would recommend getting him checked out, but what you're describing sounds fine tonight.

I'd worry that Hugo may have aspirated water during the bath. It's also possible that the bath was unrelated and that he ingested something, or that he has a neurologic problem. I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and blood work, and potentially x-rays as well.

My guess is that during the bath he aspirated some water down into his lungs. I recommend you stop trying to give him water for now. You need to get him to a vet if he is lethargic (just laying around) and groaning. This could be a serious issue in a small breed dog that is so young. I would consider this an emergency. I am so sorry that you are dealing with such a huge disaster- I hope everyone is safe! Standing in the rain for a short time while using the bathroom isn't typically enough to cause an illness, but it may not help if he was trying to fight something off. A deep hack like you are describing could be from a few different things- if he was around other dogs about a week or so ago it could be an infectious cause. Also on the list would be a structural problem like collapsing trachea, or something physically being in his throat. If he seems to feel bad- not eating well, lethargic, etc I would take him in, especially being so young! If the cough is occsional and he still seems playful and eating well you could give it some time. I hope this helps and you all stay safe!!
