Why is my dog making loud inhaling noises after a recent vet visit?

Hello, sorry to hear about Teddy. Given his breed, it sounds like he may have a common Yorkie disease called tracheomalacia or collapsing trachea. This happens when Yorkies have weak tracheal rings that cannot withstand the pressures of the windpipe on inspiration. This leads to a non-productive honking cough, sometimes referred to as a goose-honking cough. This disease however affects patients of middle to older age. Other causes of this may include kennel cough in young puppies, pneumonia, bronchitis, and even some heart conditions. If this cough persists, you should have Teddy seen by his veterinarian to further assess his cough and determine if additional diagnostics or treatments need to be implemented. In the interim, monitor his respiratory and seek emergency care if he is having a difficult time breathing, his coughing is getting worse, or if he develops any nasal/ocular discharge. Other signs may include a decreased appetite, lethargy, and vomiting. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, If the dog completed his antibiotic course but still he is presenting signs of cough and breathing sounds, I would recommend to follow up with the vet. Senior dogs can show longer signs of illness in kennel cough but that needs to be monitored by a vet because if persist further investigation may be warranted.

If Teddy only did it once, he may have just been taking a deep breath. If it' snot something that it repeated and he isn't showing any other signs such as coughing, sneezing, lack of appetite, or lethargy, then I would not worry about it :-)

After being intubated, sometimes the tube placed in the airway can cause irritation leading to a cough or other abnormal breathing sounds. What you are describing sounds almost as if Token has an excessive soft palate causing the snoring sound. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the dental cleaning and having him / her examine Token so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would consider having x-rays taken of the airway to ensure that everything is normal. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Eddie's trachea could be irritated from the ET tube used during the dental procedure. Keep a close eye on him, and if this continues over the next 24 hours or he has trouble breathing, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Any abnormal sounds with breathing is concerning. I would be worried about something causing an obstruction in his respiratory tract. I have seen several young dogs get infections/abscesses in the back of their throat from chewing on sticks or other objects. This causes a more narrow area for air to pass and can be life threatening occasionally. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. This may be due to an upper respiratory infection that could be now affecting the lower respiratory system as well such as kennel cough. It is very important that you have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to gather more information and proceed with an exam to determine what would be best at this point. They are likely going to consider prescribing antibiotics.
