Why is my dog making loud inhaling noises after a recent vet visit?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 90 lbs

I took my dog to the vet yesterday for a regular check up.. Around 4 am I noted he was making a loud noise when inhaling deeply both asleep and awake. No other changes have noted. Appears fine otherwise. What could be the issue?

It's really impossible to know what the noise was that Teddy made without seeing him. I would watch for any signs of upper respiratory disease like Bordetella ("kennel cough") that is a mild infectious disease dogs can acquire in any social situation where other dogs are present, like a vet clinic or boarding facility. If he starts coughing in the next few days this may be what is going on and I'd recommend a vet recheck as he may need antibiotics and cough suppressants. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry unless it continues.
