My puppy has a hacking cough after rain. Should I take him to the vet?

She may have a cold or kennel cough. They get this from other dogs and it causes a lot of coughing and often some nasal discharge. When dogs cough they also sometimes vomit a small amount as a result so I'm not overly concerned about the vomiting if Rainey is otherwise normal. Keep her quiet to reduce the coughing, and away from other dogs as this can be infectious. She should be better in a few days to a weeek or so. It also could be due to a throat irritation from eating the bark and other items. Same thing though, with time this should resolve on its own. If she should get worse and stops eating or starts more vomiting then it's time for a veterinary exam and treatment. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kano. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as I am concerned that he has an upper respiratory tract infection. Since the coughing has not resolved on it's own, he may require a medication. In the meantime, encourage him to continue to eat and drink. In a young dog like him, something like kennel cough needs to be considered. I recommend that you have Kingsley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Yes, he could have pneumonia. It is best to have him to a vet for an exam because if that is the case, he will need antibiotics (at the minimum) to recover. Remember, puppies have an under-developed immune system (just like human babies) so they are more susceptible to infections. Please take him to a vet as soon as possible.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A honking sounding cough with some gagging is a very typical sign of a condition called collapsing trachea. This is condition of the airway where it collapses down when they try to breath. This would be unrelated to the rake incident, but the rake incident might have stressed Gizmo to the point of an attack or episode where this collapsing trachea has become evident. It usually only flares up when they are stressed or breathing heavy. Another possible cause is kennel cough, once again unrelated to the rake incident but the stress could have caused a flare-up. This causes a hacking cough that is persistent. The other option is that the CPR episode caused trauma or inflammation to the airway or neck. Either way, the best thing to do would be to have a check up with a vet to see if some of these other underlying diseases are present, so you can treat (in terms of kennel cough or irritation of the trachea), or prevent future episodes (in terms of kennel cough). If the coughing has improved, the best thing to do in the mean-time would be to keep Gizmo quiet, comfortable, and rested, and avoid any activities where he would get excited or stressed. If he is still having trouble breathing please go to a vet right away as these episodes can spiral quickly and end up with a blocked airway all together, which can be fatal. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Precious! There are many reasons for coughing: kennel cough, allergies, pneumonia, heart failure or cancer. Since it has only been a few days it is ok to give her more time. Kennel cough takes 2 weeks to resolve. If the cough worsens or hasn’t resolved in 2 weeks then I recommend a recheck and chest X-rays. I wish you the best!
