Why is my puppy breathing funny, lethargic, and groaning after a bath?

Poor pup! Without being able to examine him in person and listen to his breathing, it's hard to say whether he just got choked on some water in the shower, or if this is something more serious. Breathing issues can be a life-threatening emergency in many cases, so the best advice I can give is to take him to your nearest emergency clinic right away to be assessed. The veterinarian there should be able to give you a better idea of what's going on, and see what kind of treatment is needed.

I'd worry that Hugo may have aspirated water during the bath. It's also possible that the bath was unrelated and that he ingested something, or that he has a neurologic problem. I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and blood work, and potentially x-rays as well.

He could have a seizure from stress or collapsed from lack of oxygen from stress or gotten some water in his lungs. If he is not up and walking and not eating or drinking, he should be seen by your vet for IV fluids for supportive care and have testing done to see what is the problem. IF he aspirated, it will show up on x rays along with his heart to see if there is problem

That is actually a normal number of breaths for a dog who is deeply sleeping. As long as he's not on death's door, respiratory disease (including fluid in the lungs) would increase his respiratory rate. Over 30 breaths per minute is the cut off. If he keeps coughing, I would recommend getting him checked out, but what you're describing sounds fine tonight.

He needs to be examined by a veterinarian right away. Your vet can take an x-ray of his chest to evaluate his lungs and airway. He could have pneumonia, asthma, heart disease, or fluids in his chest. Please call your vet immediately and schedule an appointment.

Poor puppy. Yes open mouth breathing and raspy breaths indicates that puppy is not getting enough oxygen, which can be due to either fluid in the lungs, congestion in the upper nasal passage or some other birth defect. I am sorry to hear about Dex. It sounds like he could be sick and need veterinary care. If he is breathing strangely this could potentially be a sign of a respiratory (lung)infection or a problem with his upper airway (such as his nose or the back of his throat). Being dopey/down and sleepy can also be signs of an illness. I would recommend bringing Dex in to his vet for an exam. They can use a stethescope to listen to his heart and lungs to check for abnormalities, feel his neck and look in his nose and throat. Depending on their exam findings they may recommend testing such as an x-ray or blood work to check for a cause of his symptoms. Best of luck to you and Dex!
