Why are my English Bulldog's eyes inflamed, cloudy, and itchy post-surgery?

It appears he may have an entropion. This is where the eyelids roll inward so the hair and lashes can scratch the eye and cause irritation. This maybe secondary to confirmation or secondary from swelling. Your vet can check for an ulcer and hopefully prescribe anti inflammatory meds if there is not one. From there, they will check for dry eye and discuss surgery to fix the entropion to provide permanent relief

I highly recommend that you have Rocky evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to take a close look at the eye and recommend any treatments based on how it looks. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Buddy he has been through a lot! A dermoid cyst is normal tissue located on an abnormal spot, on the eye is tends to be hair that grows on the surface of the eye. The dermoid cyst is removed via a keratectomy. That is usually curative. I think what your vet says Buddy has now are ectopic cilia, which are tiny hairs that have grown in an abnormal location and are irritating his eye causing pain. They can cause excessive tearing, blinking and can even scratch the cornea (surface of the eye). Another possibility is distichia. Distichia are abnormal rows of eyelashes that, due to abnormal conformation, rub against the cornea. If Buddy has symptoms the hairs should be removed. Electrolysis or cryosurgery is used to remove the offending hairs and is done at an Veterinary ophthalmologist. I would agree that I think Buster is most likely reacting to the internal sutures. Depending on the type of material used, internal sutures may take up to 6 months to completely dissolve. I have seen many dogs who seem itchy post operatively and it will generally subside with time. I would recommend to call the doctor and ask about using a product such as Cytopoint or Apoquel which may help with the itching. Be careful rubbing the area, it may feel great to Buster but you don't want to cause trauma. Best of luck!

I am sorry to hear about Ellie but glad the itching has stopped! The skin around her eye looks a little red and I assume this is what you are speaking of. If her stitches were just removed in the past few days it is possible there was just some residual irritation from the sutures. We can also see inflammation around the eyes like this due to allergies. I would let your vet know about her eyelid and see if they feel a trial of an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine would be beneficial, or if they recommend a topical eye ointment on the lid to try to decrease irritation.
