Is my dog's eye running from new hairs after eyelid surgery?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. It is recommended after procedures (cryosurgery or electrolysis) to recheck the area to ensure regrowth isn't occurring or hairs were not missed as sometimes there can be more than one lash growing abnormally and perhaps it was just growing in when treatment was first performed. Poor Rocky! Those eyes do look irritated. He may have a distichia (a stray lash on the inside of the eyelid; as apposed the the eyelids rolling in--entropion which I think is what you are describing he had). Sometimes these cannot be found without magnification. Its also possible that he has another condition such as uveitis (inflammation inside the layer of eye that involves the retina), or he may have KCS, also known as dry eye. If a shermer tear test has not yet been done by your vet, you might ask about it; this is a simple test for dry eye. It may be very beneficial for Rocky to see a veterinary ophthalmologist since he's having some ongoing problems. Specialists can be extremely helpful in these cases. It is a little difficult to assess this based on the picture, but if that is a hair growing from the lid or the eye, this is what we call distichia. It is more commonly seen in dogs, but is rarely seen in cats. If untreated, the condition will eventually result in dry eye and ulceration of the corneal surface. While it is generally a surgical procedure to resolve the issue, the surgery is typically curative and something that you will not have to deal with ever again. Some veterinarians will not perform surgical procedures of the eye, so depending on where you go you may be referred elsewhere. In the meantime, try and keep Blueberry's eye nice and moist with artificial tears. Do not use anything medicated until you and your vet have determined that there is no ulceration on the eye's surface. Good luck with Blueberry!

It looks like your pup is experiencing quite a bit of irritation from this problem. Unfortunately, if it is bothering his eye this much that it is watering and squinting, treatment is recommended, which involves using a special tool to kill the hair follicles so the hairs will not regrow. Other possible causes can be the eyelid rolling slightly inward (called entropion) resulting in lashes rubbing on the eye and this requires surgery to correct the eyelid conformation. Every vet doesn't have access to this equipment so you may need a specialist. This condition can predispose your dog to getting eye ulcers, which is another reason to have it treated if it is bothering him. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. This could also be due to something like mites and that can be easily determined with an exam and basic cytology which your veterinarian can perform. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

To me, this looks like a Meibomian gland cyst. These are best removed surgically. It is unlikely that it will go away on it's own. It will likely continue to grow. The surgery will remove part of the lid margin, and then close with a suture. They heal very well.
