The average dosage of SMZ-TMP for dogs is about 13mg per pound given once daily. For a 50 pound dog this would be about 650mg daily. However, if you need to give a medication such as SMZ to your dog it is best to contact your local veterinarian for the correct dosage and usage information as this dosage can vary depending on your dog's personal needs or illness.

Antibiotics should only be given under direct veterinary supervision as the antibiotics you have on hand may not be the correct dosage or even type for your dog's current condition. Giving a medication in the wrong dosage or frequency may make the illness worse or cause side effects that are detrimental to your dog.

Hello. There is a dose range for SMZ-TMP depending on what the drug is being used to treat. An average dose for an 80-pound dog would be 545 mg every 12 hours, but doses of up to 1636 mg are routinely used in some more serious conditions. My dog has a UTI. How much Sulfameth/trimethoprim should I give?

Unfortunately, we are legally prohibited from providing a dose in the absence of a physical exam and VPCR (Veterinarian-Patient-Client Relationship). It is important to have a UTI diagnosed by your veterinarian. A sterile urine sample can be collected and submitted for culture and sensitivity. This may identify the organism responsible as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment. The SMZ-TMP tabs you have may not be effective against the bacteria. Additionally, inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate any underlying condition which could delay diagnosis.

Is 500mg Doxycycline 3x daily too high for my dog with lupus?

Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Yes, you can use Augmentin but you are going to need a lot of 62.5mg tablets for a 42kg dog! The dose ranges from 5 to 12 mg per pound (10 to 25 mg/kg) twice a day. That means for a dog this size, he needs 420 to 1,050mg at each dose. Even using the lowest end of the dosing range you would have to give him 7 tablets twice a day.
