Is my dog's 300mg doxycycline dosage for Lyme disease too high?

Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting. Hello and thank you for your post! With Ehrlichiosis I typically dose at 5mg/kg every 12 hours, which equates to roughly 200mg twice daily. The 100mg dose does seem a bit low. I typically treat for about 6 weeks as well. Based on cases your vet has seen, he / she may have a reason for dosing at the 100mg twice daily. If your veterinarian recommends Doxycycline for Samson I would go ahead and give it. The benefit of the medication most likely outweighs any risk that it may have on Sampson. Doxycycline does not typically affect the growth but can affect tooth enamel when given to very young puppies. Since Sampson is 10 months old he shouldn’t have this issue at all. I hope this helps. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Boss will be fine, there is no need to take him to the vet. Doxycycline is used in dogs fairly often. At the dose he ingested there should not be any side effects at all.

I recommend calling your vet to make sure that the total dosage is correct and that Uzzi is still receiving the correct amount per dose. You should also let your vet know of any side effects you are seeing as they may consider a shorter course, changing antibiotics, or adding probiotics.
