Is Augmentin safe for my dog's draining abscess? What's the dosage?

Yes you can give this antibiotic to cats. The dosage depends entirely on the pets weight. The main problem that we run into with prescribing human medication to cats, in particular, is that they require a significantly smaller dosage and often times need liquid medication to avoid an overdose. Also antibiotics should only be given if a veterinarian confirms an infection is present. Please ask your vet who has examined and determined your pet needs antibiotics first, then they can prescribe he proper dosage based on your pets exact weight.

Hello. The normal dose is 12.5mg/kg, however you can give a higher dose as well, sometimes up to 20mg/kg (however this is usually reserved for very severe infections and given IV). A dose for a 34kg dog would be 425mg - so approximately 500mg, twice daily for 10 days. At this dose his kidney/liver should not be affected.

Yes, you can give the Amoxicillin but it may or may not help depending on what is causing the abscess. 500mg is on the high side of the dosing for a dog that size but I would give it. He needs 500mg every 12 hours and you need to do it for at least 7 days. If you don't give it correctly he may develop resistance to Amoxicillin and then it won't work next time you need it. Give it with food to minimize GI upset. If you do this treatment, the abscess clears but then comes back he will need to see a vet.

Your dog is a big dog. Medications are dosed by weight and therefore the dosage for your dog is correct. She apparently is developing some abscesses and the Penicillin and Amoxicillin are hopefully clearing up the abscesses. Please finish the course of antibiotics as prescribed by your veterinarian.

Hi there. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is a very safe antibiotic and is not very hard on the kidneys and liver. It can cause gastric upset if given on an empty stomach, so I would recommend just giving with some food. If you see changes in urination or drinking habits you can have him checked out for his kidneys, but this medication should be fine for Danny. I would only just check out how much Danny weighs. The normal dose for Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is 12.5mg/kg, so I would be giving 375mg every 12 hours to Danny assuming he weighs 30kg. Antibiotics have very large ranges in terms of dosing, and different countries will have slightly different formulations, so I would check this with your vet, as the dose may be higher with the specific compounding that your vet uses.
