My dog has HGE. Should I withhold fluids if he's not vomiting?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 22 lbs

Hi, the vet gave my dog antibiotics. He thinks my dog has HGE. Since my dog was still alert, he did not think it was necessary to hospitalize him at the moment. He asked me not to give him fluids or food, but Im scared he will get dehydrated.

Personally I would only withold fluid if a dog was vomiting profusely, I would still let it drink if it has diarrohea as it is at risk of dehydration. You could ring your vet to discuss this as a dog who is not on IV fluids should have access to water.
