My dog has HGE. Should I withhold fluids if he's not vomiting?

Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis can take a massive toal on any dog. Bunty stands the best chance by staying in the vets on fluids until his guts can fight off the infection and rejuvenate. There is no guarantee that he will make it though, but it can take up to a week on fluids before they feel better.

Dogs that have had an episode of HGE are more prone to having relapses. If Honey is not better in 24-48 hours, I would recommend a vet visit to discuss this issue. Other causes of drooling include nausea, oral pain, or stomach/intestinal blockage. The chicken and rice that you are cooking for her is perfect for the next few days. You may talk to your vet about a low fat, easily digestible, and balanced dog food that could be used long-term. There are still a few other things that could be involved in Honey's medical issues, including parvo infection, GI bacterial imbalance, pancreatitis or other pancreatic dysfunction, food allergies, intestinal parasites, or IBD, among others. If these issues continue to recur, advanced diagnostics may be warranted, like special bloodwork called a GI panel, abdominal ultrasound, or intestinal biopsies.

Poor guy. He has been through a lot this past week. It isn’t uncommon for pets to experience a bit of slowed GI motility (ileus) after having HGE. As long as he is still eating well and not seen straining to poop, he likely is just fine. Give him another day or two to form a solid normal stool and continue to monitor him for any straining, which would suggest that he is likely constipated and in need of an enema. But this is very rare following a bout of diarrhea. I would also suggest giving him a daily probiotic (ie Culturelle over the counter is highly recommended) and 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin for added fiber to help form a stoool. I am a little concerned that Honey is continuing to vomit. I would recommend waiting at least 4-6 hours between meals to give her time to digest her food. If she is not on an antinausea medication, like Cerenia, I would recommend calling your vet and seeing if you can pick some up. If she is on an antinausea medication and is still vomiting, this is very concerning. Hopefully the vomiting will stop on its own but if it doesn't you need to have Honey rechecked.

Yes. I would definitely take him to an emergency clinic immediately. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can come on very quickly and dogs can become very sick in a few hours. For this reason, I would encourage you to keep a close eye on him. If this continues to happen, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can also check in with your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe another course of the metronidazole. Otherwise, if this is not observed again, he may be fine. Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your puppy. When such a young dog has such severe symptoms, survival is very unlikely. I do not know the basis for your decision - if it was an economic decision or something else, but hospitalization with aggressive fluid therapy would have been the only chance to save Sassy. Stomach medicine is a part of the therapy, but IV fluids are very important, & even with this, Sassy may not have survived. Vomiting blood is an unusual symptom of HGE, so it is possible something else was at work here, but none the less, it was severe. I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.
