My dog had HGE, now no bowel movement. Is he constipated after HGE?

For this reason, I would encourage you to keep a close eye on him. If this continues to happen, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can also check in with your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe another course of the metronidazole. Otherwise, if this is not observed again, he may be fine. Dogs that have had an episode of HGE are more prone to having relapses. If Honey is not better in 24-48 hours, I would recommend a vet visit to discuss this issue. Other causes of drooling include nausea, oral pain, or stomach/intestinal blockage. The chicken and rice that you are cooking for her is perfect for the next few days. You may talk to your vet about a low fat, easily digestible, and balanced dog food that could be used long-term. There are still a few other things that could be involved in Honey's medical issues, including parvo infection, GI bacterial imbalance, pancreatitis or other pancreatic dysfunction, food allergies, intestinal parasites, or IBD, among others. If these issues continue to recur, advanced diagnostics may be warranted, like special bloodwork called a GI panel, abdominal ultrasound, or intestinal biopsies.

I always warn my clients that after severe diarrhea, fasting them, starting chicken and rice and metronidazole that their dog may not have a bowel movement for several days. As long as Hercules is eating, drinking, not straining to poop and is not lethargic the poop with come! If he is straining, not eating or vomiting he should be rechecked. The yogurt is fine in small amounts. Adult dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant and dairy products can cause Gi signs in some animals. If you want to use a probiotic I would use one made for animals like Purina Fortiflora. If he is tolerating the yogurt you can continue it. Have a great weekend!

Hello, sorry to hear about Molly. Yes the dark stools are likely melena (digested blood) from her hemorrhagic enteritis which may take up to 10 days to resolve completely. As long as she is eating, not vomiting, and the frequency/volume/and consistency of her stools is improving, even if slowly, then Molly can continue to be monitored at home. If she develops inappetence, vomiting or recurrent diarrhea, then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Thanks for using Pet Coach! Sometimes after not eating and having severe diarrhea, it can take time for a solid stool to reach the "end of the pipes" so to speak. I would say that 4 days is on the long end of what I expect so if she does not defecate in the next 12 hours, I would recommend seeing your vet to make sure she is not constipated (which could happen with serious dehydration). Poor guy. I am glad that he was able to have a normal bowel movement. Thanks for the update. From here moving forward it is best to add fiber to his diet daily. You can either purchase a Food that has added fiber in it already, such as Royal Canin Gastrointestinal high fiber or the Hill’s Science diet W/D, both prescription brands. Or you can try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) into his food daily. I hope this helps and best wishes with your pet Maui. Take care.

If Buzz has not had a bowel movement in 3 days, this is likely because his intestines are still normalizing stool and developing a healthy stool after the diarrhea. It can take time for stool to return to normal after having diarrhea. Up to 5 days is typically the average I see before normal stool resumes after multiple episodes of diarrhea. If he is not actively trying to defecate with nothing coming out, it is likely that is is not constipated and just needs more time for the stool to be re-established. You can try and add pumpkin (canned) to the diet and see if this helps establish normal bowel movements. I would add 2tbsp of canned pumpkin to each meal. I hope this helps!
