My puppy died from HGE. Was vet treatment inadequate for young pups?

First off, I am terribly sorry that you lost your puppy! How horrible for you! I'm also sorry your question wasn't answer. I didn't see it myself, and I certainly wish I had been able to answer it for you earlier. Please keep in mind that without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain the outcome if you had gotten him into the vet but yes there could have been a chance he would have survived had he seen a vet. Also keep in mind that bloat is extremely deadly, and even with treatment, there are dogs who will not survive. I'm afraid it's a question that cannot have a definitive answer, and I am so very sorry for your loss :-(

Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

Haemorrhagic gastroenteritis can take a massive toal on any dog. Bunty stands the best chance by staying in the vets on fluids until his guts can fight off the infection and rejuvenate. There is no guarantee that he will make it though, but it can take up to a week on fluids before they feel better.

My best advice is to be persistent with questions you have and make sure they get answered. ER and ICU vets are usually busy and preoccupied with their patients, but be sure to ask if you don't understand something explained or ask to have it explained again. I would want to understand why they think HGE occurred in Sancho, what they are currently doing and why, and what outlook does this have given Sancho's response to treatment? What are possible outcomes? For example they did a blood transfusion, I, as an owner would want to know why and what are the chances of this treatment being successful? What occurs if the transfusion is not successful? I hope this helps put your mind in the right direction. Thanks again for posting!

I am sorry to hear about your dog. The cost of treating HGE will vary depending on the region of the country where you live and the individual veterinary hospital, as well as the condition of the dog. Some dogs may only require 1 or 2 days of treatment while others may require longer or more intensive treatment. These dogs usually need to be on intravenous fluids with injectable medications initially, which can get costly. I would recommend asking your vet for an estimate for treatment and they should be able to give you a rough idea of the cost at their hospital.

Hi there. It looks like Sancho is pretty sick. Without more information on his clinical signs it is hard to give a full second opinion. I will say that the progressive anemia and the platelets dropping really concern me. In these cases if they are not responding to typical therapy I would want further diagnostics such as a pathology review of the CBC, and possibly abdominal ultrasound. Is there any chance he has been in contact with rodenticide?

Charlie was such a handsome boy, and I'm so very sorry for your sudden loss! How horrible for you :-( It could be that he ate something toxic, he could have had a GI tumor that suddenly ruptured, or he could have developed bloat and subsequent a GDV causing him to die suddenly and have blood come from his rectum. If he didn't have any vomiting or diarrhea, I wouldn't suspect HGE, but without seeing him in person I can't say for certain unfortunately. You can take him into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs) to help give you some answers. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences.
