My dog has HGE, bloody diarrhea, and is so weak. Will he make it?

For this reason, I would encourage you to keep a close eye on him. If this continues to happen, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can also check in with your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe another course of the metronidazole. Otherwise, if this is not observed again, he may be fine. Poor dog. Bloody loose stool is called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) and is commonly caused by stress on the GI tract, although other possibilities are still possible. Which is why it is always recommended to get your pet checked by your veterinarian for a full exam, to make sure they are stable. And then the pet is typically prescribed an antibiotic (i.e. Metronidazole) and a probiotic to help the pet recover from this episode. Care has to be taken in the future to avoid stressful events, and also to limit food changes that can upset the GI (gastrointestinal) tract again, causing another bout of HGE. Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your puppy. When such a young dog has such severe symptoms, survival is very unlikely. I do not know the basis for your decision - if it was an economic decision or something else, but hospitalization with aggressive fluid therapy would have been the only chance to save Sassy. Stomach medicine is a part of the therapy, but IV fluids are very important, & even with this, Sassy may not have survived. Vomiting blood is an unusual symptom of HGE, so it is possible something else was at work here, but none the less, it was severe. I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

Poor guy. No this isn't normal for a diabetic dog to all of a sudden have signs of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (bloody stool). HGE is typically caused by stress to the pet, or sometimes a bloody disorder. Toby needs to see a vet right away for antibiotics, probiotics, and also an full examination to make sure no blood disorder is the cause of this. Until you can get him in to be seen, you should only feed him a bland diet of either boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese OR Purina EN Gastrointestinal, to help combat his highly sensitive and compromised GI (gastrointestinal-stomach and intestines) tract. Yes. I would definitely take him to an emergency clinic immediately. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can come on very quickly and dogs can become very sick in a few hours. Poor guy. He has been through a lot this past week. It isn’t uncommon for pets to experience a bit of slowed GI motility (ileus) after having HGE. As long as he is still eating well and not seen straining to poop, he likely is just fine. Give him another day or two to form a solid normal stool and continue to monitor him for any straining, which would suggest that he is likely constipated and in need of an enema. But this is very rare following a bout of diarrhea. I would also suggest giving him a daily probiotic (ie Culturelle over the counter is highly recommended) and 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin for added fiber to help form a stoool.
