My dog had HGE. Is drooling and soft stool a relapse?

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 96 lbs

I believe Honey may be having a mild relapse episode of gastroenteritis. She was hospitalized with HGE, but released and was doing better. We put her back on a bland diet every 2-3 hours of 1C boiled chicken and rice. Occasionally, however, she begins to drool as though she needs to vomit, but does not vomit. She is passing stool (sometimes soft, ice-cream like, no blood), has an appetite, and will drink water but is mostly concerned with food. What else should we try?

Dogs that have had an episode of HGE are more prone to having relapses. If Honey is not better in 24-48 hours, I would recommend a vet visit to discuss this issue.

Other causes of drooling include nausea, oral pain, or stomach/intestinal blockage. The chicken and rice that you are cooking for her is perfect for the next few days. You may talk to your vet about a low fat, easily digestible, and balanced dog food that could be used long-term.

There are still a few other things that could be involved in Honey's medical issues, including parvo infection, GI bacterial imbalance, pancreatitis or other pancreatic dysfunction, food allergies, intestinal parasites, or IBD, among others. If these issues continue to recur, advanced diagnostics may be warranted, like special bloodwork called a GI panel, abdominal ultrasound, or intestinal biopsies.

I am a little concerned that Honey is continuing to vomit. I would recommend waiting at least 4-6 hours between meals to give her time to digest her food. If she is not on an antinausea medication, like Cerenia, I would recommend calling your vet and seeing if you can pick some up. If she is on an antinausea medication and is still vomiting, this is very concerning. Hopefully the vomiting will stop on its own but if it doesn't you need to have Honey rechecked.

My dog had HGE, now no bowel movement. Is he constipated after HGE?

Poor guy. He has been through a lot this past week. It isn’t uncommon for pets to experience a bit of slowed GI motility (ileus) after having HGE. As long as he is still eating well and not seen straining to poop, he likely is just fine. Give him another day or two to form a solid normal stool and continue to monitor him for any straining, which would suggest that he is likely constipated and in need of an enema. But this is very rare following a bout of diarrhea. I would also suggest giving him a daily probiotic (ie Culturelle over the counter is highly recommended) and 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin for added fiber to help form a stoool. I hope Roux has a normal stool soon. Best wishes and take care.

My dog has bloody diarrhea and gurgling stomach, is it serious?

Poor dog. Bloody loose stool is called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) and is commonly caused by stress on the GI tract, although other possibilities are still possible. Which is why it is always recommended to get your pet checked by your veterinarian for a full exam, to make sure they are stable. And then the pet is typically prescribed an antibiotic (i.e. Metronidazole) and a probiotic to help the pet recover from this episode. Care has to be taken in the future to avoid stressful events, and also to limit food changes that can upset the GI (gastrointestinal) tract again, causing another bout of HGE. My dog had HGE. Why is his poop still bloody after treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is actually not expected. This may mean that Ozzy may need to continue to be on therapy for the HGE. For this reason, I would encourage you to keep a close eye on him. If this continues to happen, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can also check in with your veterinarian to see if they can prescribe another course of the metronidazole. Otherwise, if this is not observed again, he may be fine. Why is my dog suddenly thin, weak, and drooling thick saliva?

Drooling can be a sign of nausea which can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. You could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog has blood in his stool but isn't sick. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Pookie. It sounds like he is having some hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Occasionally this is self limiting and can be resolved with a bland diet for 3-5 days (plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken). However often, pets require medications and supportive care for the associated dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea (with or without blood) that comes with this disease. If Pookie is not improving within a day, or if his diarrhea is worsening despite the bland diet, if he develops innapetence or vomiting, then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian promptly. My dog has black tarry poop after HGE. Is this normal for recovery?

Hello, sorry to hear about Molly. Yes the dark stools are likely melena (digested blood) from her hemorrhagic enteritis which may take up to 10 days to resolve completely. As long as she is eating, not vomiting, and the frequency/volume/and consistency of her stools is improving, even if slowly, then Molly can continue to be monitored at home. If she develops inappetence, vomiting or recurrent diarrhea, then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
