My female dog in heat is whining and dragging her rear. Is she okay?

It is not uncommon for her to be uncomfortable if she has never been bred before. Most females will bleed when they are in heat and are most receptive to males for a few days during this time. Some females can have silent heats where there is no bleeding to tell you she's in heat, but she will still be receptive to the male. If she seems too uncomfortable with it or she is not receptive to the male, I would recommend separating them until she is out of heat.

The most common dogs scoot on the floor or grass is because there anal glands , small lubricating glands next to the rectum, are full. You should take your dog to a veterinarian. He or she will check the glands and possibly express them. You vet may also recommend a stool exam to look for parasites, tapeworm in particular. You should definitely take her for an exam ASAP, as she isn't spayed and is suffering from pain in the abdominal area, a uterine infection would be the first suspicion, but it could of course be something else such as a gastrointestinal problem. Heat cycle by itself is not likely to be the cause of such a pain.

It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. If you are still concerned that there may be a medical problem then I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian. It is not pailnful for a bitch to be in heat. But it may not be a good idea to take her out in public--even on a leash. She may attract more than one male, and could provoke a dog fight where one or more dogs, or even you, could get hurt.

Poor Roxy! It doesn't sound silly at all! You know her better than anyone and it definitely sounds like a change. This is likely just her hormones being a little out of whack. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned. If she gets to the point where she is always whining or lethargic or a change in appetite, I would have your vet take a look at her.
