Puppy's first heat: she's in pain and uncomfortable. What can I do?

She may though become less playful perhaps at the beginning though she should come around fairly quickly. If no improvement is observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Typically the first period is often the hardest for pets; however, very rarely do you need medication to help them get through. If she is sleeping but still eating, drinking and going potty normally, then I would recommend just a warm compress applied to her belly for 5-10 minutes twice a day, as needed for mild discomfort. She will start to feel better as her menstrual cycle progresses. A pets period lasts 1-2 weeks on average. Take care of that fur baby!

You should definitely take her for an exam ASAP, as she isn't spayed and is suffering from pain in the abdominal area, a uterine infection would be the first suspicion, but it could of course be something else such as a gastrointestinal problem. Heat cycle by itself is not likely to be the cause of such a pain.

Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.

Poor Lily. You can try a heating pad, but keep the heat low and cover it with a towel so she doesn't get a burn. Offer her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice. Have her seen by a vet if she won't eat this.

This could be due to the obvious discomfort if her being in heat but it could also be due to anal gland blockage. You should take her to the vet in order to get it checked if you think she is in serious discomfort.

Hi and thanks for posting this morning. It sounds like Penelope is having her first estrus or 'heat' cycle. Dogs come into heat twice a year- once in the spring and once in the fall. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans do- they are quite different. Small drops may be all you will notice-that is normal. Each estrus cycle lasts for about 4 weeks or so, the vaginal discharge she is experiencing may last for two weeks. No need to take her into your veterinarian unless you are still concerned, but it sounds like her estrus cycle has begun which is normal to start for smaller dog around 9 months-1 year of age.
