My older dog in heat whimpers when humped. Is her pain normal?

This could be due to the obvious discomfort if her being in heat but it could also be due to anal gland blockage. You should take her to the vet in order to get it checked if you think she is in serious discomfort.

Normally, bitches in season do not behave very differently from their usual selves. Since it is her first heat, there may be a problem showing up that was not evident before her reproductive organs became active. Or, it could be something else altogether. Your best bet is to take her to the vet for a thorough exam to determine an accurate diagnosis and, if necessary, appropriate treatment plan.

She may though become less playful perhaps at the beginning though she should come around fairly quickly. If no improvement is observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! This is absolutely normal just as long as the heat cycle is active (usually up to 3 weeks), some dogs find it very uncomfortable. in some cases an infection can start as a result of a heat cycle, if this is the case you will see those symptoms continue after the heat cycle is over.

Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.

It is likely that your dog is hoarse from all the barking. Having a female dog in heat near him and not being allowed to get to her, is very stressful for your dog. If you could give him to a friend temporarily until she is past her heat (about three weeks after she stops bleeding), he may be happier and not so stressed. You also may consider having him neutered in order to avoid him getting her pregnant. Unless you are planning to breed the female, it may also be a good idea to have her spayed about 2 months after her heat.
