My female dog is in heat. Can I take her out and what should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

Our little girl is going to be tomorrow in heat. And I wanted to take her out a bit for fresh air. I was wondering if there's anything I can do to help her with the pain? I'm going to put her favourite sweater on and I think it's going to keep her warm. What else should I do? {Of course I'm going to keep her on the leash and away from the males}. Thank you.

It is not pailnful for a bitch to be in heat. But it may not be a good idea to take her out in public--even on a leash. She may attract more than one male, and could provoke a dog fight where one or more dogs, or even you, could get hurt.
