My female dog is in heat. Can I take her out and what should I do?

This could be due to the obvious discomfort if her being in heat but it could also be due to anal gland blockage. You should take her to the vet in order to get it checked if you think she is in serious discomfort.

All you can do is keep them separated - best to take one of them to another location (a family or fiend's house). I suggest you have them spayed/neutered (or at least one of them) or this will be an ongoing problem.

It is not uncommon for her to be uncomfortable if she has never been bred before. Most females will bleed when they are in heat and are most receptive to males for a few days during this time. Some females can have silent heats where there is no bleeding to tell you she's in heat, but she will still be receptive to the male. If she seems too uncomfortable with it or she is not receptive to the male, I would recommend separating them until she is out of heat.

It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Snow! Most dogs handle their heat cycles fine. Some dogs have a decreased appetite and are lethargic while others are hyperactive. There are no need for medications as they shouldn't be painful. Just always have her on a leash and do not let her outside a lone or around intact males dogs. I would have her spayed 2 months after the bleeding stops. Thanks for sharing your toe, however since we aren't human doctors there isn't much that can be done for that and you should visit your regular doctor. That said, if this is linked to your dog being in heat, keeping the two separated during her heat cycle may help reduce the behavior and prevent a fight from breaking out. Having your female spayed may also help reduce the aggressive behavior if it is related to her heat cycle as she will no longer have them. If the behavior continues to escalate, keeping the two dogs apart and speaking with a trainer in person is best so that they can address the issue and provide a more tailored plan. Picking up and keeping any and all toys, etc removed during this as well as feeding the dogs separately may also help reduce the behavior as well.
