My dog is in heat. Is her lethargy, restlessness, and whining normal?

Lethargy is normal for dogs who are in heat, and is due to the hormonal and prostaglandin changes that occur with a heat. This lethargy will pass when her heat is over, and there's really nothing you can do for her since it is due to hormonal and prostaglandin changes. I would just let her rest, give her love and attention.

Normally, bitches in season do not behave very differently from their usual selves. Since it is her first heat, there may be a problem showing up that was not evident before her reproductive organs became active. Or, it could be something else altogether. Your best bet is to take her to the vet for a thorough exam to determine an accurate diagnosis and, if necessary, appropriate treatment plan.

Lethargy and diarrhea re not usually normal during a heat cycle. Most dogs will be actively looking to mate, alert, receptive and have swelling of the vulva along with some bleeding. If you are seeing discharge that is not bleeding, diarrhea and lethargy it is best to bring her into a vet as soon as possible.

Dogs can feel lethargic and not want to eat during their heat cycle especially their first one. However, this shouldn't last long. Vomiting is a bit unusual for a heat cycle. She should get a physical examination by a veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have gastroenteritis or pancreatitis.

Hello Mariah! If you are finding red spots, Mia is likely in heat. The heavy bleeding doesn’t happen at the beginning of the heat. The swollen nopples indicate she is in heat as well. Her behavior does sound normal for a dog in heat :-)

If the discharge is normal, she is eating and not vomiting I think you can watch her. I always tell me, you know your dog best. So if she is worrying you it won't hurt to have your Vet do an exam. Hi. Margo is a sweet name. Sometimes, yes, behaviors can change with heat cycles. But I would worry if she is whining more and panting more that something is bothering her. This could be new nervousness about something, it could be that something is painful, it could be she isn't feeling well, or even that her anal glands could be bothering her. The best thing would be to make her an appointment with your veterinarian and have her get a full examination. You will then know if there is something to be worried about or not.
