Why is my 8-year-old female dog scooting her butt while in heat?

I cant see the vulva/vaginal area in this photo so I can't tell you whether or not it looks like there is a prolapse. Most often "scooting" can sometimes be a sign of anal gland irritation. Take her to your vet for an exam. An exam will be able to let you know for certain whether or not there is a prolapse of any kind. A rectal exam will allow your vet to determine if the anal glands might be bothering her, and they can express the anal glands if needed which may provide relief. When dogs scoot it’s often a sign that their anal sacs are full or infected. These are like the scent glands of a skunk. Usually they are emptied when the dog goes to the bathroom. If they fill up they cause itching and scooting. I recommend you take your dog in and have your veterinarian express her anal sacs. They can then prescribe medication to control the itching if needed. Also spayed female dogs can get low hormone levels causing urine leakage. There is daily medication you can give to control this. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

This could be due to the obvious discomfort if her being in heat but it could also be due to anal gland blockage. You should take her to the vet in order to get it checked if you think she is in serious discomfort.

When you say scooting I am assuming you mean scooting his rear end on the floor? This is a sign that his bottom is itchy or otherwise bothering him. It can be a sign of intestinal parasites, anal gland problems, and skin irritation. If it continues I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. This sounds like her anal sacs are fully and causing the scooting and itching. Even if they look normal on the outside they can be full inside. I recommend your veterinarian express the fluid in the anal sacs and they can see if they are over full or infected. The scooting can cause skin irritation. You can apply a thin coat of Vaseline to soothe the red skin. Yes allergies can cause itching but I would check the anal glands to make sure they are not the problem. Also make sure you are using warm water or something mild to clean the area after pooping. Some chemicals, soaps, and fragrances could cause a skin irritation and itching. It sounds like her anal glands may be bothering her. That is the number one reason for dogs to scoot their butt on the ground. She could also have a pulled muscle in her neck or back. It seems like it is their abdomen because they cry when you pick them up that way but it almost always their neck or back that hurts as it is wrenched when you pick them up. I suggest you have her to your vet for an exam.
