My dog in heat got out. Is she pregnant? Can I still breed her?

Hello. I am not sure why you want to breed more mixed breed puppies when there are so many available in shelters. The only reason to breed a dog is to improve the breed, not add to the overpopulation problem. Please think about this before allowing your mixed breed dog to become pregnant. Typically dogs go into heat once every six months, but if she didn't nurse the puppies, it is possible she has gone into heat again; however, that's not a common occurrence. Given that Zeva has abandoned her puppies, it is indicative that she has poor mothering ability. This could be due to her age (it's never recommended to breed a dog on her first heat), or she may simply not have good mother abilities. Based on this, I would not recommend breeding her again, and I would have her spayed. Spaying her will abort a pregnancy now if she is pregnant, and prevent future litters from occurring. There is a shot that can be done to terminate a pregnancy, but it has to be done right after mating. I would take her into a vet now.

If she is a healthy dog, she should be fine. You can have her examined by your veterinarian. A vaginal swab can be examined in the clinic for the presence of sperm. There is a canine equivalent of the "morning after" pill for accidental matings. Your vet can dispense a 5 day course of a hormone pill to prevent pregnancy.

If she is in heat and has been potentially left alone with intact male dogs, there is always a chance she may be pregnant. The only way to prevent her from becoming pregnant 100% is to have her spayed, especially if you do not wish to have puppies. It appears that she has grass stains on her, which may have been from her getting out, or just playing in your yard. If she is acting ill, it is best to seek veterinary care to try and determine the cause and treat any injuries she may have gotten. If you suspect she may already be pregnant, taking her to the vet to confirm it is also best.

They only stand for breeding a few days each cycle. For them to actually mate then you do have a 50% chance that the pregnancy took and will be successful. There are no safe medications you can use to terminate from here besides having her spayed which will prevent all future pregnancies Your vet can do an ultrasound around day 18-20 as fetal heart beats will be evident to confirm a pregnancy for you.

It all depends on whether the male dog ejaculated or not. You can run a pregnancy test and/or an ultrasound at 28 days or have an X-ray done at day 50. Write down the date when they mated. Dogs are pregnant for 60-63 days. I hope this helps!
