My unspayed dog was outside. Is she pregnant? What are the symptoms?

If Sandy wasn't in heat when she went on her adventure alone, then there would be no chance of pregnancy. Female dogs will only mate when they are in heat, and only ovulate when they are in heat. You can have her checked out by a vet to be sure she isn't pregnant if you are concerned. Symptoms of pregnancy can be subtle in the early stages, and some dogs do not appear pregnant at all. Symptoms can include enlarged and pink nipples, increased appetite, and weight gain, but the only way to know for sure is a visit with the vet. I hope this helps!

There is always a possibility if the two were tied and both are not fixed. If you suspect your dog may be pregnant, bringing her into the vet to confirm the pregnancy is best. Having your dog spayed is also a good idea if you don't wish to have puppies.

Her symptoms could be indicative of a pregnancy, but it could also be due to a false pregnancy. This is when a dog shows signs of being pregnant without actually being pregnant. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow, who can confirm if she is pregnant or is experiencing a false pregnancy. As for spaying, should she be pregnant, she would be far along in her pregnancy that at this point, spaying may not be an option. If she is having a false pregnancy, yes she can be spayed but keep in mind that if there is an increased blood flow to her uterus, the surgery will cost a little more due to the increased risks. You can speak to your vet to find out the costs involved. I would recommend having her spayed if you can, however, as it will reduce her chance of developing mammary tumors later in life (she will have an 8% chance of developing them), and will eliminate the risk of developing a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. If Lilly is licking herself again, than can be a sign she is suffering from vaginitis again. It can also be a sign of a UTI or bladder stones. If she looks pregnant but has had no contact with a male intact dog, then she may be experiencing a false pregnancy. This is when a dog shows the signs of being pregnant but isn't actually carrying puppies. Without seeing her in person, I can't say what's causing her symptoms unfortunately. I personally do recommend spaying a dog if you aren't going to breed her. Spaying her has many health benefits including eliminating the risk of her developing a pyometra later in life (an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment and requires spaying to treat), and a reduction in the chance of her developing mammary tumors later in life. I would truly consider spaying her. I hope this helps.

Since your dog was recently in heat and is now showing signs of illness I would recommend having her checked out by your veterinarian as soon as possible. She may be pregnant, having another false pregnancy, or may have a life-threatening infection in her uterus called pyometra. I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. They can take an X-ray 45 days after mating or look sooner with an ultrasound. Good luck and kisses to Luna!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is she was allowed access to intact male dogs she could be pregnant but you wouldn't see symptoms this soon. She may be experiencing a false pregnancy this is a hormonal imbalance where the body makes hormones that mimic pregnancy. The dog will nest, act anxious, carry stuffed animals around, the mammary glands can become enlarged and they can even produce milk. It lasts a few weeks then resolves. The only thing that doesn't fit is the excessive licking. Possible causes for excessive licking of the vulva is a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or a skin infection around the vulva. I would collect a urine sample and bring it with you to have Milah examined. I wish you the best!
