My 11-month lab mated on her first heat. Is she pregnant?

There is no way we can tell you if she will have purebred labrador puppies or not. If you only want purebreds then you will have to have this pregnancy terminated by your vet with a mis-mating injection and then you will need to try again on her next heat cycle. She is a bit young to be breeding anyway. Dogs should be 18-24 months old before breeding.

It could be that Lanzo is still in heat, as it would be too early for signs of pregnancy if she just had her first heat. Vulva and nipple swelling are also signs of heat, and it does take time for them to go down after a dog ends her heat. I would have her seen by a vet in three weeks for a blood test called relaxin. This is a hormone produced when a dog is pregnant. While it isn't advisable for a dog to get pregnant on her first heat, it does happen and as long as you work with your vet during her pregnancy, she can be ok.

If your mom saw Esme in the act of mating with a male dog, then it's very likely she will become pregnant. You should either prepare for puppies in about 60 days, or consider having her spayed now if you didn't intend to breed her.

I recommend you have Molly seen by your vet to make sure she is okay. Dogs usually go into heat around 6 months of age, but can also go into heat earlier, and often the first heat is not noticeable, as there is not always a lot of visible discharge. She may be pregnant, so speak to your vet about what your options are regarding that as well, and if you want to keep the puppies to term. While it isn't recommended to breed a dog on their first heat because they won't be physically or emotionally mature, it doesn't mean that Tanya can't survive her first pregnancy. I would wait three weeks from when she mated, and then take her into your vet. The vet can confirm her pregnancy, and discuss with you things you need to look out for during her pregnancy that can signify problems or times when you need to see a vet. There is a fairly good chance a mating with a tie may result in a pregnancy. You'll need to wait about 4 weeks after the mating to confirm via blood work, palpation or abdominal ultrasound. It will need to be confirmed by your veterinarian. There is a canine version of the "morning after" pill but you'll need to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible for it to be administered for maximum effect.
