Can a foreign object in my dog's eye miraculously disappear?

I would recommend getting Duke to the veterinarian ASAP. If he has a penetrating foreign body to the eye, puncture, or even a deep scratch he could potentially become blind in that eye without quick intervention. I wounds are often very painful and he may require pain medication, as well as topical medication and or systemic antibiotics. But Duke really needs to be evaluated by veterinarian in person to see what type of injury he has sustained. Good luck, I hope he’s back to normal soon. Tilt your dog's head back and hold open the eyelid with your thumb and forefinger or middle finger. Flush the eye for 10 to 15 minutes using cool water, or preferably a sterile saline eyewash or artificial tears. To flush the eye, hold the bottle of saline solution/artificial tears directly above the eye and squirt a gentle but steady stream of fluid into the eye. Or you can soak a wad of cotton in the water/solution and squeeze it into the eye repeatedly. If the foreign body cannot be removed by irrigation, seek veterinary attention.

I am so glad Buckshot came home. It is hard to tell what happened to him while he was away from home but that injury looks pretty serious and needs to be examined by a vet as soon as possible. He could have injured it a number of ways. The big concern, is if he was struck by a vehicle he may have further injuries that are not visible to you. An impact can cause serious internal injuries that may not cause immediate death or notable Illness to an untrained person but are serious nonetheless. Please, get Buckshot examined by a vet as soon as you can. Better safe than sorry. It’s too bad our dogs can’t tell us what they have been through. You may not be able to see a foreign object if it gets trapped behind the third eyelid. Signs of a corneal scratch will begin as soon as it is scratched (corneal scratches hurt). A foreign object also hurts. If Zoe is holding the eye closed, squinting or you are concerned something happened, she needs to be examined by the vet today. I hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Buddy he has been through a lot! A dermoid cyst is normal tissue located on an abnormal spot, on the eye is tends to be hair that grows on the surface of the eye. The dermoid cyst is removed via a keratectomy. That is usually curative. I think what your vet says Buddy has now are ectopic cilia, which are tiny hairs that have grown in an abnormal location and are irritating his eye causing pain. They can cause excessive tearing, blinking and can even scratch the cornea (surface of the eye). Another possibility is distichia. Distichia are abnormal rows of eyelashes that, due to abnormal conformation, rub against the cornea. If Buddy has symptoms the hairs should be removed. Electrolysis or cryosurgery is used to remove the offending hairs and is done at an Veterinary ophthalmologist. Hello. Yes, because the scar is on the cornea, as the cornea moves so does the scar. The scar may become less obvious with time, but there will probably always be some sort of spot there. Continue the eye drops as directed as eyes take a while to heal. Depending on the injury, it can take anywhere from a few days to weeks for things to heal completely. As long as he is comfortable, I would say continuing your current regimen is the way to go. If you notice squinting, rubbing at the eye, or the inflammation getting worse, I would have it rechecked as soon as possible. Hope this helps!
