Can I see a foreign object in my dog's eye? When do corneal scratch signs appear?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 20 lbs

If my dog got something in her eye, would I be able to see the object by pulling her eyelids back? And if she scratched her cornea, how many hours later would symptoms usually appear? Thanks!

You may not be able to see a foreign object if it gets trapped behind the third eyelid. Signs of a corneal scratch will begin as soon as it is scratched (corneal scratches hurt). A foreign object also hurts. If Zoe is holding the eye closed, squinting or you are concerned something happened, she needs to be examined by the vet today. I hope this helps.
